When is the last time there was anything positive to say in the upper echelons of this sport? Btw the all-time list for the women's 800m is a freak show.
You mean so that Boffey can go to yet another championship, circumventing the rule that is now applied to all other athletes that they should be a genuine top 6 finisher.
That's a bit unfair. Boffey was only selected ahead of others for Budapest, and it was a marginal call. I'd have went with Alex Bell, but there was a good case for Boffey as well. The fact is, if Gill finishes top two at the trials, she'll be selected. That's a possibility, given that Hodgkinson might not race the 800 as she gets an auto-selection. If it's a race between Reekie, Gill, Boffey, and Bell, I think k Gill could get a top two spot.
I don't think its unfair. There are certain British selections that have little logical explanation, other than favouritism. Theres a long recent history of baffling non-selections.
Anyway, FWIW Boffey has broken 2 minutes once (1.59.30). Last year in the World Championships, she finished 6th in her heat in 2.01.40. In the European Indoors in Istanbul, she was 6th in her semi-final in 2:03.94. She was only 5th in the British Championships in 2.02.28. Alex Bell was third in 2.00.68. This year, 5th in her heat in the World Indoors in 2:02.81.
Bell pb 1.57.56, last year 1.59.28 and under 2 minutes twice.
It can't be age - the selectors love Revee Walcott-Nolan too, and she is the same age as Bell.
I looked her up on Tilastapaja and power of 10. Her PB before tonight was 2:01.50.
She ran 2:09.13 in 2021 and 2:03.34 in 2022 and 2:01.50 last year. This was her first 800 of 2024, but she has run 54.82 for 400 and 4:05.87 for 1500 this year in open races with men.
In the 1500, she ran 4:39.30 in 2019, 4:28.10 in 2021, 4:19.29 in 2022 and 4:11.96 in 2023.
A letsrun visitor posted about Gill two years ago when he saw here run 2:03 at age 15.

What a rivalry she will have with Shakira King if she keeps developing also. And Keely, of course, if she is still at the top. Hopefully we will see a podium clean sweep at least once, ala Coe, Cram, McKean.

They have a big history of favouritism. If Boffey has only broken 2 minutes once and never featured highly in any races she should not be selected. 5th in the British championships is not good enough. I bet she gets selected though.
I really felt for Alex Bell last year, she couldn’t even get a place at London Diamond League - she was blocked. So had to run a random race in Tooting I think. she got the standard. And beat Boffey’s time but they said it was too late.

So at 17 she has improved 4 seconds in one year, to 1:57. I wonder if she'll do the same next year? Kratochvilova, watch out.
Now you are slandering minors. Classy.
You think it is slander to suggest that at 17 she will continue to make big improvements? If she continues to make the same gains she made in one year she will beat a doped wr. How would you like to explain that?

It's the second fastest time ever for an under-18 after Wang Yuan, which is from 1993, so, y'know...
I thought sub-2 was coming this year, but 1:57 at that age is outrageous. Extraordinary talent. The only questions is if, at her age, it's best to protect her from the hype that would come from Olympic selection or if it's best to go and gain experience.
16 year old gymnasts, figure skaters in the Olympics for decades. What’s the difference?

They aren't the same sports that require the same set of skills.
Path of understanding, lit by lantern of compassion.
No. That's the effect but what are you on?
Ah, young strong Arm seeks deeper meaning, like digging for root beneath blossom.
If lantern of compassion is effect, then fuel is empathy, understanding that all hearts carry burdens, all paths have twists and turns.
This fuel ignited by spark of kindness, found in every soul, no matter how deeply buried. And flame burns brightest when fed by wisdom, gathered through listening, learning, and seeking truth beyond surface.
So perhaps this is what I am "on," strong Arm: a journey towards greater understanding, fueled by empathy, ignited by kindness, and illuminated by wisdom.
But path is long, and each step reveals new questions, new challenges. Perhaps you will join me on this journey, for together we can learn and grow, like two lanterns lighting the way for each other.
