A relevant detail that doesn't seem to have been mentioned in this thread. Hicham El Guerrouj was running yesterday's community mile event with his daughter. He was having fun and he was in no hurry.
It's odd that Cram finished so close to El G, but at the same time, five seconds behind. Sounds like they must have jogged it together, then El G decided with 200m to go to kick so Crammy didn't have a win over him.
I would wonder El G was offered an incentive to train hard 100% committed for a year, with coaches, physio, weight room, best nutrition and resources, what could he run for a mile in a year?
This is a nice interview with Bannister in 1964. He says that a 3:30 mile was possible. He was asked specifically when he thought somebody would run 3:45, and he said that he didn't think it would happen in the next ten years. He would probably have been surprised it took until the late 90's and EPO. He certainly understood the difference that improved tracks, shoes, and training would make, unlike some here even today.
On 6 May 1964, ITN's Reggie Bosanquet interviewed Roger Bannister on the 10th anniversary of his becoming the first athlete to run a mile in under four minut...

I really pity you. Sometimes I think you are not a Brit with such degraded mental. Look at the example of others Brits and Norwegian in this forum and how they are classy in their answers and analysis.
The title of this thread alone (made by you) smell the disrespect and attempt to despise others (in your mental an African and/or Arab must be in inferior category whatever conditions).
Did you know that Mo Farah is considered the Best British athlete of all times and that most of the big stars of sport in England are not from white souche?
And in the most popular sport in the world and despite all the favorable conditions you are not bright.

You guys sound like the oldies from the early 1900's who refused to use mobile phones in their latter years as they thought they were pointless. Why would you voluntarily use shoes that put yourself at a disadvantage to the rest of your competition? Also it's not even like you can buy non-super shoe race shoes anymore, it's either wear super shoes or just wear some standard mileage trainer.
That's true. The Takumi Sen felt like the last holdout for old-style racing flats but even that's gone cushioned with energy rods now. I think ASICS might have something but there's not a lot out there anymore
I wore my Onitsuka Tiger shoes the other day and felt a lot faster than clunky trainers. Pretty much Asics flats, even though the company says they are not for performance.
