Lol! Comparing nico to Geb is like comparing a little-leaguer to Ken Griffey Jr. Geb ran 3:31 on a whim after winning the 3000 at WC. 2-time gold medalist beating top 10000m runners who ever existed. But this is where we’re at. Because of cheat shoes, millennials and gen z have no idea how good Geb was.
Stating they are the only 2 are not comparing them.
.If it so easy with super shoes then it should ALREADY be 20 to 30 athletes running sub 3:35, sub, 13, and sub 27 in the same year. So why is it only 5 who actually have, since it SO EASY?
I agree that more sub-27 guys would have similar ranges as Young if they seriously raced the shorter distances, BUT there are many reasons to be excited about the season he is producing.
1. It has been incredible to watch him develop a kick. Before this track season, it would have been laughable to think he would be a legitimate NCAA 1500m title contender (if he ran it) with a 1:47 800m to his name. And he has done so while developing his 5k/10k strength instead of sacrificing it.
2. Remember that the athletes brought up in this thread are multiple-time WORLD/OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS. When was the last time a 21-year-old American could even be in the same conversation as legends like Geb, Bekele, and Farah? Making the Olympic team and finishing in the top 8 would be amazing enough.
3. It is special that we are even seeing a world-class 10k runner in competitive 800m/1500m races. It is fun to theorize what others could have run for 800m during legendary seasons, like 2008 Bekele after dominating the Olympic 5k/10k or 2015 Farah after running 3:28 and closing the WC 5k in 1:48. With Young, we don’t have to speculate; years from now, we will know he had at least 1:47/3:34 speed during his breakout 2024 season.
Cheat shoes don’t help much in a 1500. But they help a lot in a 10000m. Is nico a sub 3:35 runner w/o cheat shoes? Probably. Is he a sub 27 w/o cheat shoes? No.
Nico ran 1:47.x, its not like he barely broke it. I actually am not sure how many of them could break 1:48, eventhough most could probably go low 1:50, and even under.

NICO YOUNG joins Haile Gebrsellasie (LOL you can't even spell hi
NICO YOUNG joins Haile Gebrsellasie as ONLY athletes EVER to have run Sub. 3:35 for 1500m, sub 13 for 5000m, and sub 27 for 10000 in the same season AND to give a damn about running a slow 800 m race in said season.
It depends on which conversation. If a time machine was available so that Young could run against a prime Geb, Bekele or Farah, he would get scorched over the last lap.
Who was comparing them or suggesting that he could beat them in a last lap. Honestly none of us know how good Nico will be by season end, it wouldn't surprise me if he ran 3:33.5, 12:52.0, 26:45.0. Heck I don't think Nico truly knows what his limit is this season!

Of course this thread is about comparing Nico to the GOATS. Just look at the thread title.
Those are pretty reasonable improvements for Nico.

. . The thread is not a comparison thread, it's simply stating facts that he is one of only two athletes who have broken all four barriers over 4 different distances in the same calendar year.

It wasn't measured, But I bet Rupp actually broke 335 when he ran his 3:51 indoor mile. If not, it was so close. (and queue the "Salazar sauce" comments)
