The hope if the coach isn't very good, is that they have a positive attitude with the kids, and that they error on the side of under training vs. over training. That said...
Earlier posters have stated...Track is absolutely brutal to coach! And I LOVE TRACK! But when you consider having to get to the meets early, and also include getting to the school to get on the bus, and then the bus ride back to the school, etc., Saturday's become 15-16 hour days. This leaves absolutely nothing in you to do anything on Sunday. So basically your weekend is shot.
And you get to do this in most cases 3 out of 4 Saturdays a month...if not more.
Pay: Let's be honest, you don't coach high school sports for the pay...and there in lies part of the problem. Very difficult to attract certain people to the position. If you have a full time career, you are not going to give any of that up to make less than minimum wage. Most distance coaches who coach cross country as well as track, coach year round. They have summer programs, go to camps or even put on camps, and meet with the kids on Saturdays for long runs when there is not a meet. And this goes on 10 out of 12 months a year for sure...and for some, more. You only get paid when you are "in" season, not out of season. So again, doing it out of passion.
For some, they can do this for 20+ years, but for others like myself, you get to the point where it takes over your life. It takes away from family and other relationships.
So the school has to pull from a very small pool of applicants and yes, sometimes they are desperate, and they hire someone who decides to do the minimum possible, which in most cases is only show up when the season begins, not meet on the weekends, not go to seminars, or read about training, and in the end, they get paid the same exact amount of money. Again, this is not about money, but let's be honest, if you could make $20-$30K a year coaching cross country and track, there might be a lot more qualified people looking ot coach. Maybe retired people, stay at home parents, etc....
That's enough for now .....
