Didn’t listen but I bet she mentions something to the effect of “being interested in someday running western states or utmb” to get herself another year of BS press. Like when she pretended to see a mountain lion bc that was cool for a summer. She is a master of staying relevant gotta hand it to her. So hard to listen to tho
Hypothyroidism: You have to give Kara credit for being fully truthful and at least respect that she doesn't hide things that even make her look bad in an effort to blow the whistle. The Goucher's introduced Salazar to Dr. Brown. But the Goucher's also were not aware he was a crooked Doctor. Soon everyone was going, and everyone was getting a hypothyroid diagnosis including Galen. One thing I did not know but she revealed in the podcast was that Kara was diagnosed by Brown with hypothyroidism, and spent over a decade believing she had it. In 2017, another dr told her she never did. But, because she was on such heavy medication for years, she couldn't stop taking the medication, and must continue medication that she never needed for her thyroid in the first place.
Can we all pause and appreciate how messed up this is??? Do NOT mess with your thyroid. I have friends who actually have hypothyroidism and it affects all their function. it is rough. Salazar and Brown had to have known how deliberately messed up what they were doing actually was. If someone did this to me, I would explode with rage. Galen was diagnosed with hypothyroidism when he was a teenager. A teenager. Thank goodness Mary seemed to avoid this part.
There may be a bit more nuance here. There’s legitimate disagreement as to whether subclinical hypothyroidism should be treated (i.e. with synthetic T4) or whether treatment is unnecessary. It’s entirely possible that what happened was Kara fell into the subclinical range, doctor 1 thought it should be treated, and doctor 2 thought it shouldn’t have been. Or that doctor 2 was of the belief that anything falling into the subclinical range shouldn’t be labeled hypothyroidism. Or that doctors 1 and 2 disagreed on whether Kara’s test results indicated subclinical hypothyroidism or overt hypothyroidism.
Basically, although it’s certainly possible that something bad happened as far as the thyroid medication, it’s also entirely possible that it didn’t.

Why do you comment if you're not interested in hearing anything she has to say? Kara's been struggling with dystonia the last couple of years, where her legs collapse underneath her and with various treatments she's happy to be to able to run 10 miles at 6-7min pace.
What I get from listening to her podcast with Des is that she loves running so much. She could save herself from the trials and tribulations of medical appts and treatments w/various degrees of success but she wants to run in her daily life. So yeah, if she were up for it, I'm sure she would want to try one of those iconic races but at the same time I think she'd miss the speed factor so wouldn't be into trail running that much. It sounds like she misses leaning into the pain, unlike Des.
It's a fair point, but I don't think nuance applies here where Dr. Brown seemed to be prescribing it to several athletes. It's pretty clear AlSal and he were fixated on this to improve performance. If this caused long term and unnecessary complications well they are not much different than Joseph Goebbels.
I appreciate that Kara has emerged as a nice voice on coverage at races, but enough of this old crap. Heal and move on. You wrote the book did all the podcasts, nothing new here.
If you are on this podcast, your agent is bored
It's because the paperback was released. Actually listen. This is how people sell books.
This is what did it for me as well. You run a max effort like that then you rip mile repeats like you didn’t just run an American record. Talk about going to the well on a race day, a normal human being wouldn’t be able to do that so easily. That’s like someone running a 2:04 marathon then going and doing 2x5 mile tempo at race pace before cooling down.
I think he got pretty arrogant about how good they were and how much protection they had, just like lance pretty much attacking reporters during the prime of his doping. He knew he wouldn’t get caught so he threw Galen in front of the cameras and said “look at what we can do” and he really made me question my own future as a runner because I didn’t know anyone that could do something like that.
I still think about watching Chris Solinsky run the AR in the same race Alberto had the cameras set up for Galen to break the AR and I think that might be one of my favorite moments in sport honestly. This big unit outta Wisconsin just clicking them off while the golden boy fades

I'd be fine with accepting this response if every single NOP athlete who went to see him was not also diagnosed with it. What are the odds of that? Keep in mind Galen was still very young when he was diagnosed by Brown.

A good article. I'm pulling for Kara. Dystonia seems like no joke. It doesn’t impact my everyday life anymore. There was a while before I was diagnosed, and it was bad. I was struggling to walk into the grocery store. I’m in a good place with medication. I feel completely stable walking now all the time.

Chris Solinsky who showed up that year noticeably leaner and annihilated all his previous PR's? That Chris Solinsky?
Even after Shelbo got busted, people still think it's as simple as "Jerry good/Alberto bad".
More track and field fans should really read this book. All of Hamilton's insights into the cycling world sure made me a lot more suspicious of this post-covid running boom.
Kara got a bad deal with AlSal. Yes, AlSal is not someone would want to vacation with, I wouldnt be thrilled to have him as a father in law, and i sure as h'ell wouldnt allow him to coach my teenage daughter. However, there is NO CHANCE that adam and kara are completely innocent. Kara tries to make it out like AlSal, Mo and Galen would secretly load up on EPO while she won a world champs medal, set the AR in the half and ran 2:24 at boston all on bread and water. Kara reveals that AlSal saw her as more than an athlete and made wildly innapropriate advances. I have a hard time believing that AlSal would feel close enough to kara to .... (not gonna spell it out here, if know you know) but not feel close enough to trust her with some Testoboost.

I don't think that could be the case here. It could apply to me because being a very old runner (still going at 70) my thyroid was getting lazy and I was given levothyroxine 0.25mg just to give it a boast. That low level could never be considered a PED because the dose is too low to affect my running or training. But in Kara's situation they were giving her quite a high dose that DOES rate as a PED so that now her thyroid is dependent on it and needs it to function at full capacity. If your scenario was correct the dose would have been much smaller and not probamatic.
At least Kara is talking about her experiences. I’d like to hear what Jordan Hasay has to say about her time with Nike/AlSal.
I feel that if Hasay took anything illegal it was without her knowing it. ALSAL said here drink this recovery drink, who knows what was in it. I could be wrong, but I hope not.
I don't interpret Kara's insistence of guilt against any one coach or program. It's her experience of modern medicine that she and the athletes were involved in and she's now informing people of the consequences. Just as athletes are speaking about REDs, or women about inconsistent menstrual cycles.
How many substances in the past 20years have now been added to the WADA LIST?? There was an article a while back that was following sports and substances used. During the early 80s there was an exogenous hormone that came out on store shelves, "DHEA" (now banned but still available at local stores) this substance was promoted to balance depleted hormones/adrenals wrecked by stress, training and offer to restore what was lost. Joan Samuelson camp was offered and she said no way.
Then there is this whole entire industry of masters/sub masters/influencers all on TRT and their co factors. Because of Doctors and objective tests they think it's needed and their legitimate because it brings their levels to normal.
The disclaimer here is that your risking shutting down your bodies natural hormones altogether and being resigned to synthetic exogenous hormones just to function. Hence the reason why many out themselves after showing a tanked test or levels of a 10year old girl.
