It’s true, but if she manages sub 29:40 and top 5 at Olympics, I’d consider that super successful for an athlete. From 5th to 1st requires an insane strength + kick which seems almost supernatural.
I would love to see 3 American men run sub 27 minutes (Fisher, Young, and?)
Alicia Monson not only run sub 30 but actually keep up with the target pace and post 29:35 at least.
It's time Americans become serious medal contenders (even if it's not for THE Gold) again in the longest track race.
Won’t be happening. Too much competition outside the US. Monson isn’t even close to be Olympic podium
You never know. Strange things can happen. No one expected Sifan Hassan to fall down last year.
Monson probably needs a little luck, but someone falls, someone gets injured, someone gets pregnant, someone gets DQ'd, someone decides to only run the 5k, and all of a sudden Monson has a shot at a medal.
I doubt many people thought that Emily Infeld would get a bronze medal in the 10k in 2015.

....
Too many Letsrun's posters are stuck on stupid and negativity. Monson placed 5th at last year's World Championships and was with the leaders with leaders with LESS than 400m to go. If she can improve to sub 29:40 it would take much for her to have a legitimate shot at a lesser medal like the bronze. Monson isn't to far off the podium, heck:
how many of you thought Tsegay would lose to an American at Indoor Worlds?
How many thought an American would run 3rd fastest indoor 3000m in a Championship race?
Yes stranger things has happened and this year they seem to be happening for the Americans. 👍
Emily Infeld, whose PR is 40 seconds off the current Olympic standard, once medalled in a world final. Monson can medal. She’s a Jenny Simpson-esque talent.

I'm not sure I'd call Monson Simpson-esque. I think of Simpson (like Centro) as a racer. She was tactically savvy and had a great kick.
From what I've seen, that's not Monson at all. She can't keep up with the faster runners, so she's not going to be close enough to take advantage of any opportunities. And she isn't a kicker, so she couldn't do a Simpson even if she could stay close.

Kicking is NOT only about speed it has A LOT to do with being strong enough to handle pace so when kicking starts you have something left to increase your pace. Alicia has stayed a few times she has not been strong enough that she had anything left to increase her pace...she basically stated, "when the kicking started I was already at my max endurance wise"
So apparently her and her coach has been working on this since her 5th place finish at last years Worlds If they got it right don't be surprised to see Alicia fighting for a lesser medal..
Man I can't wait til the elite 10000m men and women's race later today. No 💤 for me 😂

Thing is, for Monson, speed is still absolutely an issue. At the Ten last year, Eilish McColgan put 3 seconds into her over the last lap and it's not as if McColgan is an elite kicker. When Gidey broke the WR, she ran her last lap in 63 seconds, Monson's final lap for her AR was 67.99. the medallists in 10000 are running the final lap of champs races in 59-62 seconds. Has Monson ever run a 60 second final lap in any race at any distance? She's still going to need a big slice of luck for a medal to come her way
Do remember she said she had a tough bout of COVID in the beginning of the year and was not at full fitness for Millrose. Also, the ON group seemed to be training through more this year than past years.
Should have just called it “a flu” and you wouldn’t have gotten the downvotes from freaks who don’t want to admit that COVID is even a real thing.

......Most of Letsrun posters are so captivated with their own thoughts that they refuse to recognize MORE cognitive reading. DESPITE what any of you say kicking has very LITTLE to do with speed in the 5000/10000m it's all about the endurance and having something left to increase your pace.
If you never races multiple times at a pro level you wouldn't understand. I have out kicked a 1:42 800m runner in a 8k cross country race with 400m tj go NOT because I was faster but because I had more endurance left once kicking started. I have slayed a high school 10.15 100m man in a 6 x200m workout because of better endurance. Same thing applys to Alicia Monson and what she has worked on the last year.
Most of you are just cynical critters and have no idea of competition at a high level and thus don't warrant a response with you immature I inquires and comments. What a drastic waste of time....
And came 4th behind three Kenyans in the 2007 World Championship.
Not that anybody care by now but some time after that he was approached by Nike who at the time was looking for an international quality training partner for Galen Rupp. Mustafa liked his current situation in Sweden well enough and turned them down. Instead they (Nike) went with an less well merited bloke named Mo Farah. And the rest is history. :-)
Has Infeld or Molly Huddle ever been considered great kickers? they fought over that medal that Huddle celebrated too early and lost. Emma Coburn? Courtney Freirichs?
None of those four have a monster kick, I absolutely think a strength runner like Monson or Sisson without much kick can still nab a bronze or silver if everything goes right.
Exactly especially if she is strong enough to smash the sub 30 minute barrier, she will be strong enough to be a factor regardless if she medals or not. 29:49 would give her the confidence and show enough endurance to engage in the tactics of the race.

Speed endurance then? Plus lactate tolerance? Both of the specific examples you give (both from your own cv, ironic in light of your opening half sentence)are vastly different from the scenario being discussed
