This is how I see it as well. Back in the 90s/2000s, getting a new computer meant it would work 10x (probably more) faster than your previous PC, there was a ton of motivation for hardware companies to put out more powerful products. Its a little different now that everything is cloud based - all your device needs to do is to connect to the cloud, where the computations actually happen. Not a lot of motivation to build a big and powerful machine if its not needed.
There are exceptions to this of course, but not for the vast majority of tech consumers.
I haven’t been to Best Buy in a few years. But it was kind of sad. I used to love to go to Best Buy. It used to be the place to see all the new gadgets, computers, stereos, iPhones, TVs.
It made me think that there has been very few breakthrough electronic inventions in over 10 years. Nothing I can think of anyway. Smartphones are all essentially the same. Flat screen TVs are the same. Nothing new in computers.
Will we ever see any incredible industry changing inventions anymore like the IPad or IPhone or PC?
We have plenty of inventions just not necessarily in consumer electronics and maybe that's for the better. Let's focus on solving big problems like curing diseases like cancer, AIDS, Alzheimer, saving the planet, etc. as opposed to coming up with a new gadget.
Gonna need some gadgets to cure those diseases. Not just happy thoughts and hope.
Seeing a SpaceX booster land itself on barge in the middle of the ocean is not something I expected to see in 2010. I'm of the age that I remember the Challenger disaster, being in 6th grade and watching it among my peers at school.
The tantalizing idea that in my lifetime, I may see someone set foot on Mars is awesome. The next frontier, along with AI, are bio-computer implants and genetic engineering. Humans are the next technological playground.
There will be super humans in a couple decades, and who knows how Earth and her societies are going to handle that?

I love how you are gauging whether or not we have had breakthrough inventions based entirely on what you see inside a best buy

Only the best minds work at Best Buy! Terrific people!
All of the amazing technology that we have today is based on WW2 technology. We need Putin to hurry up and start WW3 now that Germany has gone soft. Hundreds of millions of people might die, but we will have cooler gadgets once the dust settles!
Young folks are spoiled by gadgets and apps whereas many of us old folks refuse to catchup. But your attitude scares me!
