I'm 32 and this was my favorite Superbowl performance yet. Usher is an incredibly talented vocalist, dancer, and overall entertainer. The marching band instrumentals were appropriate and enjoyable, the roller skate choreography was wild, and the female guitar shredder was amazing.
My favorite part - Usher payed tribute to his late drummer Aaron Spears, who tragically passed away recently at 47, by leaving an empty drum set on stage. Spears was known in drumming circles as one of the best and most influential drummers of the modern era, one of the fathers of gospel chops.
I'm 64 and TBH- It's not the music I would listen to- but that doesn't mean it was bad.
I thought it started out excellent- the choreography was excellent and I was thinking about how much rehearsal it took.
IMHO- it fell apart at the end- like they could have ended earlier.

Can someone explain to us Europeans what the qualification criteria for the halftime show is? Why isn't it the current Champ (Billboard Leader)?
They have to pay to be the featured show. It goes to the highest bidder.
They always go for someone that who's safe and established, someone that most of the target audience will at least be familiar with. Someone just like Usher who's biggest hits are in the past and now being played at weddings.
I love me some Usher. But I was very disappointed in his Super Bowl performance. What the xxxx happened? I was very let down.
Same. The Weeknd was 100x better. But he's also 20 years younger than Usher. Even Rihanna was better last year, and that show was pretty tepid. Will we ever get something other than "urban" music for this show? It doesn't have to be Aerosmith or Paul McCartney or Taylor Swift or country, RHCP or blink 182 or Foo Fighters would rock it.
I would prefer a hair band tribute. Get Def Leppard, Poison, Ratt, Cinderella, maybe others up there and have them play a song each. People would go NUTS for that.

What about KC and the Sunshine band? People would really go nuts for that.

The Weeknd is 33, Usher is 45, and you are delusional if you think The Weeknd's performance was better.
I think we need to go back to the olden days and have super bowl half time shows that had not big stars and were more like a cross between an Olympic opening ceremony and a marching band halftime show. We really do not have the kind of cross cultural/generational pop stars that can do a halftime show that most everyone would be interested in watching like Michael Jackson, Prince or Diana Ross. Usher is a middle aged man and his main audience is in their late 30s and 40s. Throwing in some more current hip hop stars doesn't really do much to broaden the appeal. So, no matter who you put on stage at halftime, they are going to turn off at least half the audience simply because their music only appeals to a certain age and cultural group.
I think it is based on the demographics most likely to watch the Super Bowl, or network TV in general. That demographic is likely not the under 30 group. They're probably mostly watching netflix and tiktok.
Usher is still relevant to the over 30's crowd.
Is he? Is he really? I am over 30, and the only time I can imagine someone playing Usher is as a half-joking, “delightfully tacky” throwback to their younger days.
I mean, he just sold out his stadium tour within minutes, so.
And the screaming and dancing fans near the stage are totally fake the real football fans in the stands are sitting down.
If you gave me the choice to meet a randomly selected Super Bowl halftime show extra, or a randomly selected "real football fan in the stands," I would chose to meet the halftime show extra. Every. Single. Time.
Nothing is more basic and boring than the average NFL fan.
