It’s worth a shot for these runners after retiring from track but 1500m - marathon isn’t a natural switch/progression. Unless you’re Hassan and have that unusual range.
Why did she go to the press conference? It made it look like she was very competitive with a good chance of finishing well!
Jenny is an attention hound. In this case, she would have been gracious, although perhaps foolish, to tuen down the attention. That said, she was never going to be a factor and she knew it. Orlando played up the hometown aspect, which is a stretch at best.
When Jenny races at Drake she is from Iowa. When it suits, she is from Florida. She will never actually finish a competitive marathon.
I can think of nobody of her goat status that's less of an attention hound. There are a thousand threads asking what she is doing, where she is? Where are all the social media posts documenting her every step? She is practically invisible. Just goes about her business.
After she accused NOP of using grey area doping, she was being interviewed after a race. Then, a LetsRun reporter asked her if she was a patient of doctor brown. Her entire demeanor changed and she went into defense mode, admitting she was in fact using the same doctor and hormone therapy as the NOP athletes but she needed it. The video was posted on this site. Find it and repost it please.
Very true. Jenny got called out.
At least Molly Huddle did not go to the pre race press conference acting like a pretender.
Yall are clueless. In every sport, if the goat is competing, everyone wants to hear from Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, tiger woods. She is at least the American goat. If you are not interested in hearing from our goat going into first marathon trials, maybe you don't like running? She is in a class by herself in female middle distance running in the United States. She's running in her first marathon trial. You should be interested in what she has to say. Unless of course , you think road racing gets way too much attention already by the media?
I also like how so many of you have such a high bar emotionally and professionally .
I can say for sure that if I was a professional runner 365 days a year and I'm losing gold /silver on the world stage to people who are convicted dopers, i might be forgiven for being a bit bitter. But I know all you Have such high emotional I q.

Yeah, the thought that someone who is essentially paid to be a brand ambassador should refuse press appearances is quite the take.
This thread is a blast from the past. 10+ years ago, few runners got as much hate on here as Jenny (Barringer) Simpson. Then she won gold and silver at Worlds, aged out of her prime, and eventually the hate turned to Houlihan (for very good reasons).
A lot of runners of that generation (Goucher, Rupp, Coburn) have gotten much less vitriol in recent year. Simpson is in that category, but seemingly that hate was always lying dormant.
I'll also mention that although the political discourse on this site has gotten worse, I'd say we're overall less hostile to the best American runners of this generation (Fisher, Kincaid, Chelimo, Monson, Cranny, Brazier, etc.) than last generation (Simpson, Rupp, Lagat, Goucher, Flanagan, Coburn, Rowbury, Centro, Symmonds)
It was disappointing to see her drop out like that . On Carrie Tollefson’s podcast Jenny sounded like she was taking the marathon trials seriously so it’s bad that she didn’t even make 18 miles.
Those split second decisions to drop out of a long race don’t always make sense when you look back on them, but most people have had that moment where they just know they don’t want to continue. Sometimes our minds help us work through it and push on, and sometimes we drop. Practically speaking, Simpson was well out of it by then. But even Betsy Saina was running in a small pack which contained third place very late in the race and she still just stepped off the road and laid down. Who knows what any DNF-er was feeling/thinking in the moment.
I can relate to that. Only ran a couple of marathons, but the second (and faster one), was even split to within 30 seconds, so I wasn't dying, and yet I had a tremendous urge to stop at around 18 miles, a "just don't want to run anymore feeling than any specific discomfort or fatigue)...
Obviously the Alberto Salazar doping ban the subsequent reactions from the many athletes in Doha has been one of the bigger stories. One of the athletes most outspoken against the NOP has been American Jenny Simpson. She eve...
She called out NOP for cheating using therapeutic use exemptions. NOP athletes were pissed, especially Craig Engles. LRC did some digging and found out she also had a therapeutic use exemption and was a patient of Dr. Browns, the thyroid hormone doctor. LRC asked her about it during an interview and she was caught out and she knew it.

You don’t remember how around 2019, Jenny would accuse any athlete that beat her, US or not, of being on drugs?
From Craig Engels:
”Jenny’s just brutal. The more people she says is dirty, it’s like, are you saying that they’re not capable of running what you are because you’re clean? When she gets in front of the camera, she gets on her high horse and all that stuff.”
She was a drama queen then who had a morality complex that did allow her to accept that her competitors were simply out-training and out-racing her. The same thing is happening here. I am sure she is throwing another temper tantrum and screaming that everyone who qualified today should be under suspicion of doping.
Congrats on losing a 1500 by three and a half seconds today, Craig.

I am waiting for a "Engels is Back" thread to start.

Ya gotta be all in to run 120+ mile weeks for an extended period.
The issue for her is not foot speed but endurance and time on feet.

Interesting because usually in most sports its the opposite. Older players are all of the sudden the best thing thing since sliced bread and everyone new is a poser. But you are right, lots of hate for our heroes.
Interesting that’s your impression of her and her online presence. I think her post expresses a lot of gratitude for the people who support her. She’s being brave and trying something new. Do you expect yourself to be an expert at a new distance (esp. the marathon) the first time you race it? Do you expect yourself to be perfect every time you race? Turns out she’s a human, and unexpected things happen to all humans on race day. Just because she had a bad debut due to cramping doesn’t mean she is bad at this distance. She absolutely crushed a half marathon to qualify for the trials. Very few people can qualify for the trials from a half in the first place.

Former steepler, great HM, then a crampy marathon. She's on the same track as malmo, except he ran a better half and finished his first marathon.
