In developed countries, people don't have kids young because they can't afford to (and because there are too many young men who can't commit to adult relationships).
Its no surprise that most successful sportsmen do not lead the playboy lifestyle and are in settled long term relationships or marriages, with or without kids.
So how about this: I am tempted to call for a band of all championships -they ruin the real races too much (the fast ones) that athletes should base their legacy on…
There’s a reason why not even the most faithful Mo Farah fans regard him as the Goat, and that’s not because of lack of medals, but because of lack of fast times -we simply don’t know how fast he could have run. And I don’t want Jakob to fall in the same trap, especially not in the 5000m -where he easily could win a whole lot of (additional) golds, without producing a fast time. Jakob could win 15 WC / Oly golds in the 5000m (f.ex because of his 1500m speed /kick) and still be listed with a 12.48 pb -I would then call him an “also ran” (pretty sure, based on his sayings, he would agree with me here; he wants to win the 5000m fair and square, and not as a 1500m runner, and he wants all his races to be fast -getting his potential out in times).
Building legacy based on championships are a false narrative (far to much coincidence -your competitors could be sick or injured, or boxed in, or fall, or missed their peak, or running another distance, or you could be in a century of general week competition (Jakob’s situation compared to El Guerrouj’s situation) -heck; I don’t even regard (my man) Jakob as the Olympic champ in the 1500m -he got this title because of the covid delay of the champs -in my eyes Cheruiyot is the real champ. But that doesn’t make Jakob smaller at all -Oly and WC golds are of almost no importance in my eyes. Coe f.ex is one of the all time greats because of his 1.41.73 (and 1.42.33) + his 1000m pb, despite being a rather poor 1500m / mile runner (his back to back Oly golds don’t mean a thing to me, they are coincidentally -apart from his supreme home straight speed of course- and Ovett or Cram and a lot of others could very well been the guys with two golds instead. So what? -Ovett would have been a failure anyways -too bad in the 800m / 1500m / mile (times), and his 800m Oly gold doesn’t mean a thing -Coe would have beaten him by 2 sec if he hadn’t run like an idiot… Well, Ovett might have been a good 3/ 5 k runner -we’ll never know. But hardly in the 1500m -ran poorly despite good pacing… Coe on the other hand seems to have been talented (also psychologically) also in the 1500m -a lot of his races clearly ruined because of too fast first lap. Luckily he got his 3.47.33 and eventually his 3.29 -without these two he would have been a 1500m / mile failure, even if he had doubled his double golds in the event…
I would pick Cram well above Coe and Ovett if he hadn’t screwed up in his Bislett mile WR (3.46) because of supposed rivalry with a weak Coe that day -better pacing would have may be given him a 3.44 high that day -clearly would have overshadowed Coe’s Olympic credentials. Cram would then clearly surpassed Coe amongst the greats (in the 1500m), even if the first hadn’t had his 1983 WC win (again not important -only a clown race)…
Maybe it’s a good thing that I’m not in charge in the WA, because I also cherish a lot of the good memories championships have brought -I really liked what Centro did in 2016. That doesn’t make him a very very good runner, but a smart one, with supreme field an positioning skills (fun to watch); all respect to him! And Rudisha’s Oly WR in London, and the honest tough Cheruiyot in Doha. And even Wightman in WC 2022 -he took his ability to shift (that he showed in his first sub 3.30 run in 2020) and combined it with new found strength, and beat Jakob -impressive! And of course a whole bunch of other past races, and more to come…
I think I redraw my cancel suggestion. But in the 5000m I dream of rules like this: Not hotter than 20 degrees Celsius,(too much advantage Jakob, and a few others) and not windy, and no gold to the winner unless leading a lap or two during the race (minus the last one) -this to avoid endurance 1500m runners like Katir, and Nordås and Jakob to make easy wins (I really agree with Jakob here -a 5000m is 5000m and not a 1500m; one should really win in an honest way).
If it runs in the family (no pun intended), Jakob might be done sooner than posters hope. History has Henrik run, get married, have children, get injured and never hit the same level (though not necessarily in that order).
Wow he'll be a father at 23 or 24, which is early. In general in developed countries only uneducated hicks become parents that early. But I guess he never really had much of an education.
Tell me you know nothing about life in Norway without telling me you know nothing about life in Norway.

He's not wrong. It's extremely uncommon to become parents at such a young age. The average Norwegian mother has her first child at 30.2 years old (2023 data).
Exceptions are:
- Religious people (both native and imported) - "Accidental pregnancies" - Very rich and very poor people
At 23-24 years old most normal people are finishing up their master's and entering the labor market. For most of them it takes years to buy a house or apartment that's suitable for childrearing.

It's not ideal timing for sure, but congrats to them. Maybe it will give Jakob a second wind - he said himself he has been struggling with motivation after the 2020 (2021) Olympics.
Honestly, how many kids does Rupp have? How'd he pull that off? Hell, Paula Radcliffe had a kid and came back and broke a world record, right? (Or at least kicked ass).
Agree that it's not ideal timing for Paris Olympics, at least for most people, but in his case, who knows? He's had a pretty crazy last 12 months with all those awesome times, marriage, the family drama, and now this. Probably puts his injury situation into perspective.
Meanwhile, how many just-out-of-college kids in the US are putting their lives on hold and holding down a minimum wage job to pursue their dream of qualifying for the Olympic Trials by the time they're 30?
I'm surprised but happy - rare to see celebrities in the western world who start having kids young like this. I think it would be better if our western culture did more to celebrate (or at least, accept and accomodate) children.

Filip? A very similar story.
You are ignoring a lot of facts here: 1. Henrik pb’ed in both the 3 and 5000m last season.
2. Filip made a huge pb in the 3000 just a couple of years ago, in a season with a lot of injuries and sickness.
Saying that, the clock is obviously ticking fast for both, especially when it comes to the 1500m, but (given their potential) it’s very unlikely that their progress in the distance events have come to a halt…
3. Jakob seems to be in a total different universe when it comes to un revealed potential (I’m pretty much buying it when he says that his injuries -that come and go- in a way kick him out of a too stiff a comfort zone; him having to improvise and letting up might not only be a bad thing… The same with the “becoming a father situation”…

Agree with 1+2. No. 3: Maybe I am tired (only on my second coffee) but that sentence is gibberish to me, I literally don't understand what you are trying to get across.

Give it a second try when you’re not that tired. Or give me some details so I can understand what you don’t understand…
It is due in June. The olympics begin in July. It makes no sense.
He’s rich. His wife doesn’t ever have to work. You don’t think she’ll be doing most of the work with the baby leading up to the Olympics? If he has to sleep in a different room or whatever for a couple months for his job that will continue to make his family wealthy, not that big of a deal.
what's your definition of rich?
and how would you know the financial status of someone you don't know?
