We like to have one thread per topic so we merged a 2nd thread that was started after this one into this one. The 2nd thread had the title of "Boston Mayor accidentally sends out invite for an "Electeds of color"-only holiday party to all Boston city councilors"
Just imagine if they sent out a party invitation to everyone but blacks
If you can't understand why your comparison doesn't work, you definitely shouldn't go to the party.😆
Yes, specific spaces for women (without men), and people of color (without white people) can be very important.
Goodness, some people are very stupid.
Absolutely. POCs need places to get away from whites and their aggression and oppression. I can't think of a better place to stay away from white people than at a holiday party where whites are typically at their worst.
It's really refreshing that at least in Boston an Asian American is considered to be a person of color. I thought Asian Americans were being discriminated against like the whites and Jews but I guess not any more. They now are a minority group worthy of being propped up.
First mayor we have had that's not from Boston.
Big mistake.
She is horrible on censorship, free speech, bodily autonomy
"[B]odily autonomy" is quite ambiguous. For some, it alleges a right to refuse vaccinations; for others it alleges a right to slaughter, sometimes torturously, innocent unborn human beings; and for still others, it alleges a right to take heroin, cocaine, meth, etc.
Anti-woke champion at UPenn Prof. Wax has been on a tear against “Asians.” You don’t seem to understand, racialisation and race are processes one is subjected to, ascribed and imposed, not identities one volunteers themselves for.
You could go around minding your business nose clean valuable member of your society when suddenly the entire cast of anti-woke start attacking you as a DEI hire haha

That's not exactly true. And certainly not true as to who you are suggesting does the subjecting, ascribing and imposing and why they do so. The story that started this thread, for example, has the Asian mayor ascribing, subjecting and imposing a racialization process onto white people as part of an admission process for a holiday party.
Thousands of educators and standardized test administrators around the country ascribe, subject and impose a written interrogatory racialization process on all teenagers who take the SAT/ACT tests.

To counter your 2nd point, would you feel the same way if white people had safe spaces free from people of color? Or if non-blacks had safe spaces free from blacks?
Hahaha, if you think that "counters" my point you are simply showing your deep ignorance on the topic.
If you can't understand why your comparison doesn't work, the education system has failed you and those around you.
Sooner than later we will have segregated schools, communities, grocery stores, and so on. This time it will be liberals and blacks fighting for segregated schools. All in the name of “progress.”

I go to many large work-related holiday parties every year, and as a black person would love a space to celebrate without a high probability of being exposed to racism.
My white friends don't share this interest, because they haven't experienced violent and oppressive racism throughout their lives.
It's cute: this thread shows exactly why these spaces are needed. (As does the LR board on a regular basis.)

To hypocrites some elements of autonomy are more important than others. They will scream about "freedom" to not have basic immunizations, while voting to deny women choices over their own bodies (such as access to birth control) and supporting laws against drug use by adults.

Don't kid yourself on people's interests. Your white friends cherish the times they can get away from you when you go off one of your harangues.

Direct abortion is intended to kill, but not to kill a woman's own body. It denies a lifetime of choices to its target.
I'm stunned to learn she doubled down and still had the party anyway. Here is an EXCELLENT column that explains why.

It’s easy to understand why Mayor Wu would host an event solely for Council-members who aren’t white. Wu is young, just 38, educated by the elite, champions arch-progressive issues like wetland protection and transgender rights – and was mentored by none other than even more progressive Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Wu inhabits an elite realm where identity and intersectionality not merely mean something, but mean everything…How you govern, the issues you champion and, it seems, who’s invited to your Holiday events. ... Mayor Wu is hardly the only social-justice type who believes in the validity of an official event that denies folks access simply because of their race. Minority-only “safe spaces” have become ubiquitous across college campuses and corporations over the past few years. Often they’re camouflaged as “affinity groups” and positioned as vehicles for education and healing. But no jargon – no matter how dense – can deny the implications of such affairs. For one thing, they reaffirm the notion that people of colour are achieving something – jobs, college admissions, party invites – solely because of their ethnic identity. Unfortunately in this case it’s true. But this thinking is also used to undermine and deny minority achievement –
First of all, if you think this is only in the past, you are kidding yourself with your privilege.
... The original post questioned whether someone could “imagine this.” And I pointed out that imagining is not required because it happens all the time.
Correct. White-only events, spaces and organizations exist all across the country. These are maintained by both interpersonal and systemic racism.
No need to "imagine" anything.
Lots of mayors holding whites only events are there?
A woke district outside of Chicago (the town where Northwestern is located) did that - segregated classes for black students since they were performing worse than white or Asian students

I have an honest question for you. If you are experiencing racism at these work events, why not file an EEOC complaint?
There are laws in place and a system set up to deal with racial discrimination in the workplace. Why do people need to also segregate themselves?

Alleges a right to refuse vaccines?
That's an odd way to put it.
How about the right to not be forced or coerced into putting an experimental gene therapy into your body as Wu did?

I call BS on this. If there's actual racism at a holiday party (of course, not the 'white man bad' woke type) the person would be fired
