Like Frias last year, she is breaking her letter of intent, so may have to sit out a bit.
At Foot Locker, Karrie Baloga said that while she wasn't yet ready to announce what school she was transferring to, that she was 100% sure she could run right away for her new school in both indoor and outdoor track.
I'm not saying she is correct or incorrect. I'm just saying that she said she looked into it and she was sure she was right. I guess we'll find out who is right in a few weeks.
Good info. Maybe she has a waiver of some sort. I'm happy if she can race right away.
she did not give it time to see if it would work out, maybe 16 weeks with the team, around 30 workouts, 2 periodization cycles and you tap out? That is too soon but perhaps at NAU she will do better?
when you know you know. good on her for leaving a bad situation instead of hanging around hoping it gets better.
She just posted on instagram like a month ago that she is “proud to be a Buff” but clearly she wasn’t lol

You can be proud to be a member of your school and or team and then still feel like its not your path to stay for whatever reason. From the outside looking in as well as some things I've heard from other athletes, the team (CU) doesn't seem to be very close or supportive of one another. Lot's of sub groups being clicky. As a freshman in a new state, school, team etc. I can only imagine how lonely it could feel if you aren't meshing with your team and coach. Then you see online and in person at races teams that seem to truly love being together and supporting one another and having a blast! NAU women are known for blasting music before races in their tent, being super close and not allowing egos and attitudes to be a part of the culture. If I saw that and was unhappy w my situation I'd move on too. Also maybe Wetmore doesn't allow that kind of fun free spirited attitudes that Smith does. Wetmore seems stern and not easy going to me? Could be wrong but he's not who I would want as a young female runner. Some may love his style obviously hes been successful.

while I agree with everything you wrote I still say Smith's relaxed free spirited nature towards his team is very calculated and deliberate. having watched many interviews with him he always talks about culture and running for something bigger than yourself. i think it's so much easier for a teammate to sacrifice for the good of the team if they genuinely like the people around them.

Agreed Smith takes a calculated approach to everything he does and allows to happen on/with the team. I think that reiterates my point is that the culture is important, running for and with others and no big egos or selfishness allowed. In this way he's built a team of women who will like each other and will be supportive and caring while also having a ton of fun. Looks like at nationals and other big meets they have a team house and are swimming, playing games, coaches cooking meals and hanging out together a lot. Im curious if other teams do this in lieu of the traditional hotel? Obviously NO team is perfect but it's a great start.
looks like Stearns is graduating today. I assume she'll be in grad school next year?
she's listed as a 'Redshirt Junior' on their track and field website. there's also that Covid year she gets. she's definetly coming back next year.
I generally assume that all the top girls will use up their eligibility, at least at the big programs since i assume they are all on full scholarship. Guys can be a trickier guess since the guys team gets so many fewer scholarships to spread around. Much tougher decision to use eligibility after you have your degree if you have to pay for some or all of those semesters.

It turns out that Karrie Baloga was right. She is eligible to run for NAU this indoor season. She just ran the mile and 800 at the NAU meet yesterday.
