Sadie Engelhardt was invited to participate in the Foot Locker National race. And she accepted that invitation. But after NXN she was too worn out and she decided not to run Foot Locker after all.
Foot Locker is not considering changing the date of their West Regional race, but as of this year they are now open to extending invitations to some of the top runners in the country.
Or...Rachel went out WAY too fast. She was 5 flat or 5:01 in Balboa Park. That's totally unnecessary and she paid the price. She had a serious shot at winning, just like NXN if she had ran even slightly more conservative. She knew who the other runners were and she knew what they were capable of. I'm from Michigan, I like her, but...she completely blew it and trust me, she knows it.
IMO I think Leachman and Forsyth's poor performances are much more related to the fact they were obvious uncomfortable being in a field were someone else was actually capable of going with them. Both Leachman and Forsyth have dominated all year, and weren't mentally prepared for actually competition, and as a result had a crazy first kilo trying to establish a lead. Maybe they will learn from that and do better this week and try to ease into the race more, but even in dry conditions I think the same script happens were Leachman and Forsyth have a stupid fast first k trying to front run like they have all year.

Did Cathy Schiro blow it when she went through the Mile at Balboa in 4:54 when she won it?

Of course she knows she messed up, but I don't think she can control her impulses. Rachel has some kind of obsessive compulsive thing going on. She's not dumb. She was well aware that 5 flat at Balboa Park was a really bad idea but she couldn't help herself.
In fact, she actually ran the first 1 minute of the race as fast as the boys! That's completely nuts.
Losing one race is not that big of a deal, but Rachel doesn't seem to be able to make quality decisions, which is a bigger issue, and may effect her life outside of running too.
On the plus side, several of the people that I talked to at Balboa Park thought that Rachel was more impressive than Leachman. Going out in 5 flat and still managing to finish third is really good. Rachel is in amazing shape right now.

I’m more impressed with the winner. Racing is more than ‘still managing.’ She is a senior and for two weeks in a row, ran the same racing strategy. It’s clear she’s very talented, but an all-out attack straight from the gun will never give you your best result.

Cathy Schiro didn't go through the mile in 4:54 regardless of what the official split times may say.
In the early years of the Balboa Park course it was very short. And the first mile mark was definitely not a mile.
In 1983 (the year before Schiro won) Janet Smith went out in 4:55 at what they claimed was the mile mark, even though her PR that year on the track was only about 4:55.
It wasn't until 1988 that the Balboa Park course turned into more or less what the course is today.
The short course back then was why the girls winners from 1983 to 1986 were all well under 17 minutes. Then once the course became a proper 5k, it took several more decades before 4 more girls winners were under 17 minutes.
Back to Rachel Forsyth, yes 5 flat for the first mile on today's Balboa Park course is way too fast.
