I watched this and just assumed that the motorcycles were cops. … But no, just regular civilians as far as I can tell. That is a huge failure on NYRR. Also, I’m a little surprised New York City would allow them to run without full police support/lead.

Most plaintiffs’ lawyers would sue everyone that they have a good faith belief might have been negligent, and then you figure out who actually screwed up in discovery. Possible candidates include the bus transit entity, NYRR, city, and whoever else was involved in course organization.
2022 Bronx 10 mismeasurement, massive transportation chaos at the 2022 NYCM, bib tag screwups at the 2023 Staten Island Half, 5 Ave Mile cancellation, neglecting to close the course at the 2023 Dash to the Finish...
NYRR is a shadow of the world-leading institution it was, pre-covid. They have a media guy running the place and apparently the operations team is severely weakened.
I bet a journalist or a business school case-study writer could do an interesting research project on the decline of NYRR after firing its top staff and then COVID. Watching a world-class institution decline hurts.

Or maybe in our evermore busy World non-runners no longer care about our running culture's desperate Hail Mary for attention with big city races, half marathon and marathons? Maybe they even no longer hold back how irritating it can be FOR THEM?
"I had to take a detour because you effing runners had blocked up half the city" a single mother from a neighbouring city told me last year when she came late for work (and I hadn't even been in that race!)
You don't see hockey teams or fotball teams blocking off entire big parking lots to stage outdoor matches and forcing away the normal traffic while doing so.
not sure what your post has to do with growing evidence of significant institutional decline at NYRR but ok got your point. Yes, big city marathons tick off a lot of locals. They also charm many many more than the angry ones, of course.

the NYRR pays vast sums to the NYPD to work roads courses. Shocking amounts, which is why the marathon and half marathons cost hundreds of dollars to enter. The cops want their cut and that cut goes up and up.

Sad to see the SEC football of DII xc, the central region, beat itself up. All the best teams in the country in one region is unfair. Fortunately the real NCAA championships already took place last weekend in Joplin.
If you look at the course map, it is a very simple course to control. The last 1.25 miles are in Central Park so only about 1.85 need to be blocked. It is only two streets, 42nd street for one mile, turn right on 6th Avenue and go straight about a mile into the Park. Too easy.
Which raises the question: if they didn't want to pay for road closures and cops, why not just run the whole race in Central Park? Couldn't be that hard to create a course that exists entirely within the confines of CP.
I haven't seen a cop on the subway doing anything besides messing around on their phone is years. Could be an NYRR gaffe or just standard NYPD behavior - a couple cops making time and a half while playing Angry Birds or scrolling Facebook.

If it had been a few minutes earlier, the bus would have run into one of the MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL HEATS. Yes folks. Minutes earlier there were 13 year olds out on the course. This is not OK. WHERE WERE THE ROAD BARRIERS???? Has there been any statement yet?

Business is booming. They're selling out these races in a way I've never seen before. I don't get it.

Almost guarantees an early sellout for all the regular races, and makes life much much harder for serious athletes, who can't even get into races. NYRR has made pleasing recreational runners their raison d'etre, at the expense of serious racers. It's a choice.

yeah it def is awkward reading the pre race release from NYRR stating proudly that the youth races will 'run the same course as the elites'. They might wanna..downplay that now.
This sounds like it's a toss-up between NYRR and the transportation authority as to who's at fault, possibly even both. Also, I've been in races where people have wound up driving on to the route, and had to slowly get around us runners (due to volunteers not being at every intersection along the race route), but nothing this dangerous has ever happened, yet (knock on wood).

This should never, ever happen in NYC and especially not at a NYRR race. NYRR is responsible for securing the course and ensuring the safety of all of the participants. There should have been blue police barriers in place. Trucks blocking the entrances to any street that enters the route. This is a serious error and beyond a serious problem.

They've had the 9+1 forever, but I think it's the recreational runner that is their bread and butter now, and there's ALOT of them. And the main focus of all of their coverage of their events too.
