I live in Minneapolis. Cancelation is the right call. You do NOT want to be running a marathon in this. Very dangerous.
I’m pretty sure a lot of this trash is from TCIM pr folks. They suck balls, have awful overpriced races and don’t give a $hit about runners. I was outside all day yesterday. Know people that went for 50+ mile bike rides and it was a great fall day.
yeah, I get it was way warmer than ideal. But it wouldn’t have even been an issue for the 10 mile and marathon runners just need to understand their limits and make smart choices.
I was told at the expo on Friday that cancellation was “very unlikely” and the race would be held if current weather predictions held. So much for that. I can understand the cancellation (we are a litigious society and the 7 hr marathoners butter these races’ bread) but man, they should have been more transparent
I looked up the race results from last year. One half the field took longer than 4:26 to finish the race. Thousands of people (who had already run for four hours) would be on the course in 80+ degree weather for another hour or more. Keep in mind that forecasts are often wrong by several degrees. The forecast is for cloudy, but if the sun came out, it could easily jump to 85 degees by 10AM.
Keep in mind that a lot (maybe the majority) of these 5 hour plus marathoners are ignorant about the risks of running in extreme heat: heat exhaustion, heat stroke, dehydration, hyponatremia. Also, this group includes a lot of people with preexisting health conditions.

Yes, of course. Big conspiracy afoot by a bunch of treacherous race organizing geeks to screw local race sponsors and runners out of millions of $$$$$.
Or maybe they don't want to triple the casualty count compared to the 2007 event that landed hundreds in hospital (and which was run the same day that Chicago canceled its marathon)?

Let's go with conspiracy. Much more fun.
Didn’t say anything about a conspiracy. Said it’s a third rate pos race organization. On parr with Rock n Roll. People need to just understand they have completely abandoned the idea about hosting a top tier race and are all about big fun runs. Might as well just stop timing it. Maybe they can determine a winner based on a dance competition at mile 20 or something?

I don't think bashing organizations is helpful so I'll try to actually describe they're problems. TCM caters everything to the hobby jogger general public. That is the smart move for finances. They bought up other races and raced prices. They new events have a better "experience", but most letsrun vistors would agree that they'd rather have cheaper races and nix the music, food, swag, and other extras.
You can tell that many of you would rather see people die, literally die in the heat, than to have the race cancelled. This is very revealing about what type of people you are.

Actual heat related illness or injury is very unlikely in a marathon. Even elites are going too slow. It's a bigger risk in races like the 10k where you have very high exertion causing the body temp to spike quickly. (E.g., Salazar getting last rites after Falmouth, vs. having an abnormally low body temp after the duel in the sun.) Five hour marathoners might be very uncomfortable, but they're not going to get heat stroke.
I live 2 blocks away from the 24 mile mark, for context. Went out for a walk this morning and though humid it was beautiful; if the start was at 6AM with even a 6 hour cutoff there is no reason whatsoever this race couldn't have happened. I understand the logistical issues involved but this heatwave was no secret, the organizers knew it was coming. Whatever the hassles involved it beats the f**k out of telling everyone, "Too bad about your training/travel/etc, we're not doing it." The organizers have massive egg on their face here; at the very least there is zero reason the 10 mile couldn't have happened.
