Except for 1992, I've been to every Olympic Trials since 1988. I've enjoyed them all. Every location has had advantages and disadvantages. All things considered, Eugene has been my favorite place to attend a track meet. I'm glad the Trials are returning there and I just finished booking my motel.
I’ve been to the Trials in Eugene in 1972, 1976, 1980 (a sad affair, thanks Jimmy) 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2021 and enjoyed it each and every time.
It's also possible that no one else put in a bid to host.
This is what I want to know. We know Mt. SAC bid in 2020 because they initially were awarded the Trials before USATF yanked them away. I haven't heard of anyone else who bid in '24 apart from Eugene. Anyone know anything?
I know of a local organization that did here. But the you aren't a journalist, so I'm would never tell you.

You two need to keep going there because I won't.
Supply and demand at play. Please don't complain when the interest in Track & Field drops some more.
Glad I booked last week based on the consensus predictions. Booked 10 nights across the street for $1200 out the door. Same room is now $409 per night; $4621.80 total.
The gouge is on already...quick look at the Best Western site has the New Oregon going at $405/night!
"America's Best Value Inn" Eugene living up to its name, only $499 a night with the added convenience that you get to park your car right in front of your room.

There are a lot of reasons that interest in Track & Field has dropped. The fact that the Olympic Trials are usually in Eugene is down at the very bottom of the list.
A crazy thought... maybe Nike and its unlimited billions could help finance a couple new hotels and parking structures.
Nike is not in the hotel business. Are they going to operate those hotels once they are built? If Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton, IHG, etc. thought there was demand in Eugene they would build hotels there.
Having a few track meets and Oregon football games a year is not enough demand when rooms sit empty most of the year. Where are the business travelors many hotels rely on to sustain revenue year-round in Eugene? Where are the major tourist attractions?
Eugene is such a bad location but Nike will always get what they want
My bigger concern is how USATF schedules trials 6 weeks out from the WC or Olympics.
By doing this, every time, USATF puts US distance athletes at a disadvantage to other country’s athletes who usually hold their selection meet 3 weeks out from the completion or some countries that just select athletes and those athletes then can better peak for the actual major championship.
It is very difficult to hold peak beyond 5 weeks for distance runners We see this every WC and Olympics year where US distance runners, who make the team, often are gassed come the actual event and underperform.
The US competitive landscape for distance runners is very deep and therefore extremely hard to make a team when not in top form.
I don’t understand the sprints, jumps and throws events with respect to peaking.

I think that World Athletics has a cut off date in early July, so the Olympic team needs to be picked by then.
I don't think that USATF could have chosen to hold the Olympic Trials a few weeks later even if they wanted to.
Wanted to go to the trials but after spending 10 days of my life in Eugene for worlds in 2023 I am not spending my vacation money again in a college town. Move the meet anywhere else.

The dates and location were were well predicted in advance and cancellation is free, if you really were in interested in going, you would have booked prior to the announcement as I did for under $100 per night, $1200 OTD for 10 nights. The truth is that you are just an agitator who has no interest in actually going or supporting the sport you claim to love, you just prefer to b!tch about sh!t.
booked a room at a hotel (believe me nothing fancy) that is within walking distance of the track and will probably cancel my reservation. NOT going to pay over $5000 for a hotel room for the trials
In the spirit of fostering some productive conversation, what about a split Trials scenario? Distance events, 800 meters an up, get decided at a five day event held in Eugene mid-June in an Olympic year. Sprints and field events are contested over five days in a warmer place like Austin, Jacksonville, NYC, etc. the following week.
The marathon and racewalk Trials are held separately from the track events. Why not split up the shorter stuff. This might be good for the fans, the athletes, television, etc.
That’s a dumb idea. Makes it much more difficult to coordinate and any athletes doing a 400/800 would have to race at two trials. Another downside of a shorter trials is less rest for anyone else who’s doubling. No one cares about the racewalk and the marathon actually needs to be well before to accommodate athletes who double like Rupp did.
