Jacob is such a unique person and talent I put nothing by this dude. I’ll be the first to say it. I think he gets it all. I also agree he could crush the steeple. 8:26 at 16. That is insane. Do you realize how much better he is now? 1500? He runs it like el g. Definitely that and the marathon hardest bit given his mile he nails it. Next year I bet. I would think he’ll work on his speed a little more next year to ensure he can kick to a win at the OG. That will get him his second. The marathon will be next hardest. But anyone who can probably run sub 4 pace for a 5k will be good at the marathon. I have no idea how good but he will be good. Tergat was tall and ran some pretty good marathons as I recall.
How did Mo do in the thon? What is your basis for believing JI can break the marathon WR?
Many posters here are complete morons. They are Jakob fanboys. They believe he can do anything.
I love these type of self imposed challenges. His biggest problem will be the time it takes to accomplish the records in each respective event. He may well break a few records and then take years to accomplish the more difficult ones - thereby allowing some other up and coming star to break a record he achieved five years previously. Logic says that the marathon would be the last summit he would conquer. - And if prior to that an athlete breaks the 5000m WR he set five years previously then there’s no going back to challenge for it again.
Closest example we have in current times is Letesenbet Gidey who until this year held 5,10 and half marathon records. She blew her chance by finishing second in her debut marathon at Valencia last year. She made a valiant attempt to get back on track this year but fell short in Berlin by three seconds. - In any case Tsegay has well and truly placed it out of her reach now. I think she will hold the marathon record one day, but never regain the 5000m record for the length of time required for her to also demolish the marathon.
As Salazar said, Mo was a greyhound. He trained for the 1500m while racing the 5000m-10000m so that he could dominate in the last 1k. Jakob runs the 1500m as his target race while training the vast majority of the time at 10k-marathon pace. Now a lot of people talk big about moving up to the marathon eventually. Most of them do it only after they are pretty much shot and they give it only a cursory attempt, maybe none. However, the success of some younger female track runners at the marathon may lead to it becoming more common on the male side. Tergat, Geb, Bekele, and Kipchoge all ran a decade or so at the top level before moving up.
He's got a good chance of having the 1500, Mile, 2k, 3k, and 2 mile within a couple years. I could definitely see him at least having a shot at the 5k and 10k during the second half of the decade if he switches to focus on them. Of course by that time any of those records could be knocked further down or taken away from Jakob. By the time he would be moving up to focus on the half and the marathon I doubt he'd still have all the track records even if at one point he had broken each of the track records. I think with the top talent in the world right now at essentially all of those distances there would be someone able to go with him during a WR attempt and give him competition pretty much right down to the line as Nuguse did the other day - there are people capable of running near the WR, and if Jakob is going for it there will be a runner in probably all the events who on their best day can run right behind him all the way and challenge him at the end in a WR attempt.
Anyway I'd say somewhere along that list of events there's gonna be records he simply isn't able to get. Also if he ever gets injured and misses a year of racing that makes it much less likely.
You’re out of your mind. The 5k may be the easiest for him to break. Double world champ and 2 mile world record holder. This dude can probably run sub 4 pace for 5k.
You guys act like he’s an 800 guy moving up. Make no mistake, Ingy is a 5000 guy moving down. As I recall, Haile had some sick 1500s and marathons. So there is one example. He just chose to focus on the 5 and 10. Gidey is another. Possibly Hassan. I bet Kipchoge could have run 3:45 in super shoes w/pacing lights when he was racing the 5000. And he is your world record holder at marathon.

I think he gets most of them. Basic reason. I'm not impressed by endurance records. They always look unbeatable until the next prodigy comes along and can simply sustain lap speed that was unthinkable for the prior generation. Jakob detailed the same thing during the related interview. He said the distances with slower pace would be the easiest because it's simply putting in the work.
Gebrselassie tried on three separate occasions to break the 8 minute barrier and ran 8:01 every single time. Seems you have no idea just how impressive 7:54 really is.

It's a shame that prodigies like Usain Bolt never put in the mileage, he would have easily shattered all the distance records indeed.

He has two non-championship distance records. He is so on his way to owning every record from the 1500 to the marathon. In my generation that was called a "blowhard". Ron Clarke leaves him in the dust when it comes to breaking records - and ones that mattered.
i applaud the attitude and drive but he's still a ways away from the WR in his premier event, and has only set WRs in "off" events (not diminishing them, the 2 mile was crazy good).
We should probably be talking about which premier record he has the best shot at (probably the 3k, or the mile if you count that) before discussing which would be the hardest

This blowhard: olympic medal, wc medals, 2 records with a bright future. You, a stand up citizen: bitter old man, who spends his days rotting on a message board with nothing to show for it.

3k is not a premier record.
people have been venerating Komen's 7:20 on here for years. just because it's not an event run at championships doesnt mean the record isn't strong.
