Jakob is having one of the greatest seasons we have ever seen. It’s a shame he lost in Budapest, but in the future we’ll look back on this the same way we look at El G/Kipketer in 2000.

Fine run. I am very interested as to when he may or may not go for the storied 3k record, as how he goes.
Except the EPO as I do not think El G doped. Adil Kaouch and a few other Maroc athletes doped but I just don't think El G did. His performances are pretty consistent and might I say underwhelming sometimes, didn't really fulfil his fullest potential at all distances from 1500m to 5000m. He didn't even break his 1500m wr at least one more time, he struggled greatly. That's the mark of an EPO-less runner.
Give JI a lifetime to train with no good test for EPO, and ElG some new shoes and some lights, run ‘em head to head. My money’s on JI.
Nothing to be proud of at all. In fact he is a pretty mediocre runner. Would hide that activity on Strava to say the least.
For one, he always had a fluid stride so always looked relatively in control. The only video I can find is some grainy footage where you can barely make out one runner to the next, but it didn’t strike me as any more relaxed than Jakob or even himself in the 1500 wr. Plus 4:44 vs 4:41 is like 25 meters and I’m not giving someone 25 meters from an eye test.
I guess I just don’t see why we should give him credit for an imaginary time based on his running form at the end of a race.
The statute of limitations is 8 years for EPO back in late 1990s? 1998 + 8 = 2006? EPO test were available by early 2000s so ELG would be busted by then but he wasn't.
jakobs second 1600m was run in 3:46.4
insane!
@3:45 the only visible facial expression I saw shows him a little tired. Not that relaxed I would say.
@4:41 he was struggling, form was breaking down, clearly very tired.
But I agree that the shoes were terrible back then, that's the main thing. next then the lack of pace lights. All these means there is strong likelihood that ELG runs faster than 4:44 or 4:43 in 2023. 4:42 is a good starting point.
With a time slower than the 3000m world record?

you sure it wasn't the 1609.344 meter run, my American friend?
Come on, he doesn't look that tired at the end but I'm surprised at the amount of head bobbing left and right at 3:45. Didn't see that earlier when I used to watch it in the past. He certainly didn't exhibit such wastage of motion in the mile and 1500m wr, at least not so much. As long as we agree on the fact that he didn't use PEDs and had way inferior shoes, the natural answer would emerge that he conceivably would have run faster than 4:44 even without today's technology.
There are also questions to be asked regarding the pre-race circumstances of that particular 2000m wr race:
1) Might he be conceivably ill, tired, or a little off for that wr race which could result in an even faster time?
2) What was his itinerary before the race. How many days rest between his last hard race?
3) Which track and stadium was the race held at? What were the temperature and all that stuff like?
Out of this 3 I think I can prioritize number 1) as the fatigue factor after a long season (assumned ran after the WC in Seville 99 when he ran 3:27:65 exhausted and solo) is quite significant. Whereas his 1500m wr was ran in June in Rome 1998 if I'm not wrong. If he ran 4:44 very tired, which his head bobbing left and right seems to suggest, then it's quite likely that he would be running faster than 4:44 at least (as I mentioned 4:41 earlier which is a bit quicker) even without today's shoe and light technology.
What do you think?
It was set by the 1500m and mile record holder in his prime. What do you think?
No yes he definitely looked tired as you yourself mentioned with his head moving everywhere. It's probably due to the exertions at the WC. Not sure when exactly this race took place but pretty sure it was after the WC. As I said earlier, I agree with you that EIG is clean as the statute of limitations overlaps his results for at least 8 years. Having said that, I think he had a TUE for asthma drug Advair or something (not 100% sure) for the 2004 Athens Olympics. Had started suffering asthma since 2003 and retired in 2005 because of same. I think the TUE legally aided him to win both 1500m and 5000m at Athens but I think it's still a little unfair.
Finally, if a runner can come out and publicly put it out there out loud that he didn't use PED at all, EIG was the only one to ever do that out of all the 1500m runners past and present. Of course he did so only after terrible accusations thrown at him by certain quarters, mostly jealous losers. This would then be an authentic confession to being clean.
I think you sound like skip bayless stretching to make a point nobody cares about. They ran their races and the races are over. One time is faster than the other.
Your post is a textbook case of "special pleading."
Your definition of "jogging" is raising his arms and slowing a bit down with 8-10m to go -someone posted the actual video elsewhere in this thread for your enjoyment While that definition could have changed a non-WR in the 100 or 200 to a WR, it's not changing a 1.5 second improvement of the 2000 WR to a non-WR.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
