That should count as a win as she lost to a DSD athlete.
Absolutely true, and I thought the same when I read that post. However, all the true female stars were not in that particular race. You can remove one guy (who couldn't break any women's records) but if a race has Hassan, Faith et. al. that's even worse. Not every race has all the top 5 or so but the races deciding medals tend to have most of them.
She got 5th at worlds in the 10k. Cranny and her are clearly the top 2, 10k and even 5k runners. Why would she move up before Paris? To compete against 20+ women running sub 2:18? I mean come on.
But in that race she was with the leaders at the bell, and finished 7 seconds behind the winner. So in a fast race, she gets outkicked. In a slow race, like Saturday's final, she gets outkicked.
Doesn't mean she should become a marathoner tomorrow. But she's not going to medal on the track.
The men's 5k closed in 52.XX. No shot if you're not already a sub-4 miler. And probably need low 3:50 speed on the men's side.
On the women's side, you need sub-4 speed I think.
....
That's quite funny as Almaz Ayana never had sub 4:10 speed and was Olympic Champion at 10000m and World Champion at 5000m. SHE NEVER developed a kick.
Letsenbet Giday was always out kicked for Gold and in span of 1 year developed a kick ENOUGH to hold of 10000m best kickers to win Gold.
Neither of the forementioned runners ever produced sub 60 last laps but they showed it's possible to medal or win Gold without being a great kicker.
Yes it maybe a little harder for Alicia but as long as she continues to improve then she always have a chance. This year she closed her 10000m in 67 when the year before her best last lap was a 72 last lap.
Almaz Ayana never had sub-4:10 1500 speed?? That’s a good one!
Also Monson ran the last lap of the 10k in 63.85, not 67.
The Marathon is very competitive too, but likely easier to medal in WC since most of the time the best athletes don’t care about WC and prefer to make money by racing majors not a surprise. Also at Olympics is easier to medal since the games are in the summer and the racing conditions are usually far from ideal and many athletes bomb racing. That’s why you see B athletes medaling at the women’s marathon.
Alicia Monson is a great runner...when it comes to fast grinding races. Any race that is tactical and requires closing speed, she stands zero chance. The world champs were a prime example of this. She was with the lead pack but as the race neared the finish and the front-runners injected speed, she was out the backdoor. As such, there is zero chance she'll ever medal in the 5k or 10k. If she wants to medal, its time to think about the half and full marathons.
How has no one pointed out that there is no such thing as a "full marathon"?
The marathon refers to a race that is 42.195 km or 26.2 miles long. Only hobby joggers say "I'm doing the full". It's like saying "I'm doing the full 10km"
Only 5th place? Better move up to the marathon where she'll get 13th and then you can tell her she needs to move up to ultras. Getting a medal is partly luck. She just has to keep showing up and hope 2 or 3 more east Africans have a bad day.
+1. She almost won a DL 3k once, so, you never know what's going to happen.

It's not the finishing speed. I think she and the rest were tapped out just to be able hang until the last lap or two. Africans were just getting started.
Alicia my princess keep doing the 10000m as I see another big step up for you. Continue your fitness and improve you last lap kick and you in the hunt for a medal. Letsenbet Giday improved her last lap GREATLY in one year and so can Alicia Monson.
