8th and 9th in the 1500 at Ed Murphey. 3:38 for Engels and 3:40 for Hunter.
In 2019 they seemed like some of America's brightest talents. Now they are just embarrassing. They are losing to nobodies.
1 Henry Wynne USA 3:34.67 2 Johnny Gregorek USA 3:35.04 3 Vince Ciattei USA 3:35.55 4 Kasey Knevelbaard USA 3:35.94 5 Dillon Maggard USA 3:36.18 6 Jack Antsey AUS 3:36.71 7 Brett Meyer USA 3:37.72 8 Drew Hunter USA 3:38.51 9 Craig Engels USA 3:40.62
The last time Johnny Gregorek raced an 800 he was humbled and embarrassed and DNF'd. He just did not have the leg speed to go out with the others. He worked so hard from 300 to 600m that he had nothing left in tank by 650.
I think that 800 served him well last night. I think Johnny should race more 800's to get his base speed up.
I think that, because 3:30 is the new standard on the world stage, people forget how tough it is to run 3:35ish. A lot of the guys in this race aren't nobodies. Wynne & Gregorek both ran very close to their PBs. Drew's 1500 PB is 3:34.84. Winning would've taken a career best effort. He's finally stringing together some consistent training & is hopping in more races than the last couple of years & we're just gonna knock him for not being a few seconds faster. He'll get back there. He's had some good results this year. He ran 3:35 in June.

Drew and Engels lost to Brett Meyer, Dillon Maggard, and Jack Antsey. I've never heard of them before. There's no way to spin this as a good result or a decent result. It is HORRIBLE.
Yes, some have PB's that are a little faster than Drew, but that's exactly the problem. Drew was one of the best high school athletes of ALL TIME. These guys were nowhere close to Drew's level in high school. He is getting surpassed by everyone.
The beginning of the end for Drew and Engels. They shouldn't be losing to these guys heading into an Olympic year.
Engels most likely has something wrong. Hunter just hasn’t translated to pro running. Tinman and mom were great for high school. “CV” and moderate mileage doesn’t transfer to pro running.
Tinman wasn’t the issue, CV was not the issue … Drew Hunter is the issue.
Engels is 29. Milers usually peak in their mid-20s. 2019 (a long time ago by athletic standards) was his career peak. Hunter hasn't improved for years. He's still a mid 3:30s 1500 runner, which seems to be his ceiling.
Sometimes you wonder if those clauses hurt Nike as much as help. Not sure how much it helps the brand seeing half healthy athletes coming off surgery shuffling their way around a track wearing the full pro kit. I get why they have the clause (so they can do something if people pull what Mu might pull) but still...
Drew Hunter is on a 10 year Adidas contract. Nike’s four year contracts protect them from severe drop-offs like this. 10 years is a huge gamble

Agreed. But Olympic year? None of them are going to Paris. Especially Drew has zero chance, look at their Tinman IG and they try to spin this as Drew being "teammate of the year".
