Katir has been faster than Romo all season, so I don't think there's necessarily reason for concern about him. Remember Katir ran faster than Komen's WR indoors and ran 3:28 over everyone except Jakob in Oslo. This is probably more of a good sign for Mechaal than it's a bad sign for Katir or Romo. Also recall that Romo didn't even win NCAAs last year before his 4th at Worlds. Today, he was so out of it with a lap to go that I wouldn't rule out something being wrong, but I think it's more likely that he's just in his last big training block before Worlds (and the guys ahead of him are really good), since it seems like that what the rest of OAC is up to right now.
Why would you have a big training block smack in the middle of you national championship? He was there to win. Always such a weird excuse.
not really I was already at home watching. I don't believe that Katir was the overwhelming favourite to win cause Mechaal had just ran a very impressive 15 in London and Romo is also under 3:30 for the 15. Another thing to consider is that Katir was not the defending champ. Now with that in mind, he still was the favourite based on seed time and that might have influenced his racing because it looked like he implored the same tactics he used at Euro team champs where he started near the back, worked his way to the front, and took control with two laps to go. That worked against lesser competition but in this race he was more of a rabbit for mechaal who sat behind the whole time and only passed him with a few meters left. I was not totally surprised to see Adel win because in his own right he is very fast and is an all time runner for Spain so yk, gotta put some respect on him. Katir was clearly tightening up as well he looked like he was running in sand. I don't think this was necessarily a bad race for Katir because his strategy was working for awhile it wasn't like he got his doors blown off at 200 he was winning with about 30 meters to go but could not put it away. Good result for Adel, and hopefully a good lesson for Katir to learn from for Budapest. As for Romo, was expecting him to be 2nd to Katir but losing to him and Adel isn't terrible; there are worse runners he could have lost too. Out of the podium finishers, I still believe Katir has the best chance to medal. His tactics of trying to win with a few laps to go show potential that he is mentally strong enough to take the race into his own hands, albeit with lesser competition compared to Jakob; but as with all of his 1500's this season, he needs that final 50m. Unsurprisingly, Jakob is still the favourite but would love to see Katir come back from this and pull off the upset.
Katir’s first tactical 1500m of the season ends in a loss. I think this is a good sign for Jakob and Yared.
My opinion after having watch Katir at length, is that he is happy to settle for 2nd place generally. He doesn't really go to the front and try to hold it.
Ritz is a rubbish coach with a huge budget, and every athlete knows it. Nuguse needs to get a result at World Champs of the added strength. Then get out of there before his speed is sapped.
Lol, sure. 3:29.02 AR, 3:29.18, 3:29.41 AR, 14:19 AR, 8:13 AR, all this season… “rubbish coach.”
i watched the interview and agreed he didn't seem to beat up over it, as long as he is making teams I think he is fine with only making the podium. That's not saying that he isn't trying to win national championships, more of that El Campeonato de Espana is not the end goal and more of a stepping stone towards World Champs. Last year he was second as well and didn't look too upset about it and we all know how he finished later that summer.
Mechaal looks back to 2021 form. Katir lacks an extra gear in his kick. But most concerning is whether there is something up with Mario injury or fitness-wise?
Monaco 5000m race and his side effects.
Katir looked exhausted at the end of that race.
Now looking at the dates: Monacco was at a week ago.
Spanish federation are running at their loss making these trials.

What if Katir is joking of you, playing a theatrical piece to make you "dream"?

Watch the 2019 women’s 1500 final in Doha. Swap out Jakob for Hassan. That’s how Budapest is going down. Katir is well suited to run like Kipyegon in that race and go for silver. Jakob is going to wreck them all, string them out and strength will determine 2nd and 3rd place. All the people who don’t think Jakob can win from the front, just a reminder that Hassan stayed out of trouble at the start, took the lead by 300 m and never relinquished it. That’s what Jakob is going to do next month. Hassan’s front running 3:51 high in that race will be like Jakob doing the same in 3:27 high. Katir certainly could run 2nd in a Jakob rabbited race in 3:28 high, low 3:29. Not saying this is certain, but it’s not going to be a kicker’s race at the end. It’s going to be a hang on for you life race.
In all honesty, I think Katir peaked in Florence/Oslo ... and these latest weeks maybe he is not top fitness.
My theory is based on the following:
If Katir was in fitness of of Florence/Oslo he would have ranked 1 or 2 in Monaco 5000m with 12:42 at least.
Yes you were wrong all others that were beating on Kiplimo, Aregawi ... etc.
Katir can and should beat these guys any day if he is in top fitness.
So now I think Katir is getting some slight lack of fitness du to the last races.
He need to solve this problem before the worlds.

Mohamed Katir will run the 1,500 and 5,000 meter events at the Budapest World Championships
"It's my goal, I'm ready," advances the athlete from Mula.
Mohamed Katir is clear about his objectives in the World Cups in Budapest . After being runner-up in a great final duel with Abdel Mechaal in the final of 1,500 meters in the Spanish championships, the athlete from Mula has confirmed that he will run both this distance and the 5,000 meters in Hungary with victory on his mind.
Katir has confirmed that the two world events are his goal this season. In fact, he stated that races run with the best in Spain was more of a prerequisite for his true expectations of the season.
"I have come to comply and that is what I have done . You have to show your worth in the World Cup. You have to come to make a podium because there are people with the minimum and you stay out ," he said about his second place in Torrent in a race that broke the championships record.
For the outdoor athletics world championships, both the 1,500-meter and 5,000-meter competitions have been signed up, although they involve two different efforts with a great diversity of factors. For example, the classification of the 1,500 meters in the previous phases will only be by positions and not by times . "It's my goal, I'm ready for both. To show the cards we have...", he advanced.
The duel against Abdel Mechaal can serve as a reference after having learned the lesson. " I have to have a little more patience. I haven't had patience, I risked it at 600 meters and it only happened to me at 2 or 3 meters. I'm really fast, it was seen a month ago," Katir commented on what could change your strategy.
Very glad to see Katir is finally ready to do the long anticipated double. As he is one of my favorite athletes, I hope to see him walk away with 2 medals - silver in the 1500 and perhaps bronze in the 5000 - although I expect the 5000 to be the tougher challenge.

Because you are prioritizing worlds over your nathional championship. Sadly an impossible concept in many countries.
Mario Garcia Romo has seemed to be more of an 8/15 guy or pure miler in the past. Yes, I know he was all-American in XC in 2021 but that was the Covid year. To be a good miler you have to be strong. That being said, Ritz is likely training him like Ollie, who essentially trains like Joe with slightly less mileage and slightly less speed. Ritz is turning Garcia Romo into a distance runner, not a middle distance runner. A race like this should have been perfect for Garcia Romo in the past. His last 100 isn’t there like it used to be.
Garcia Romo has never been an 8/15 runner. He finished 3rd at NCAAs in the 3K and has a 7:33 pr. He isn't gonna light the world on fire at 10K, but he is definitely a 1,500/3,000 guy, not an 800/1,500.
Yeah, I've always thought of Mario as a pretty versatile runner with a lot of strength. He was one of the runners who opted to do both 2021 indoors and XC within a few days of each other (so that's a 3k just behind Hocker and Teare, plus anchoring a DMR and then flying out for an XC 10k two days later). He's shown that he can beat Katir before but he's used to seeing the back of that beautiful ponytail. This, however, is a seriously good result for Mechaal, who can take a lot of confidence and feel that if he builds on this for worlds, he will surprise a lot of people.
I think Katir just made too big a move too early. If he decided to stretch things out from 600 or even 500 out then gradually ratchet things down he could've had the response he needed the last 50 meters. Both Katir and Mechaal both looked very much all out with 400 to go but Mechaal had the advantage of tailing Katir. Hats off to Mechaal though that was a world-class last lap.
Garcia Romo has a high ceiling but he's inconsistent. He's not like Jakob, Katir, or even Hoare who will reliably run 3:30. Garcia will regularly drop a 3:34/35. That's why I wouldn't pick him as a likely medallist even though
Still looking for him to drop his first 3:33 or 3:34 alone like what did Mechaal today while Katir paced the last 600m.
