they dont meet it. they dont go. i dont waste money, it goes somewhere more efficient.
i dont see the problem, as a UKA member.
Agree that sending runners around the world to compete dressed up in nationalistic costumes likely isn’t in the interest of taxpayers … but neither is corporate / pharmaceutical industry welfare to the tune of $10k per year (per person) for NHS, nor the dole writ large, nor most of the military spending (which is mostly covered by American taxpayers at this point). I’m sure that list could go on and on.
But none of that addresses why she can’t fund her own way… Which is precisely what every athlete ought to be doing.
Great Britain won just 1 gold medal (in rowing) at the 1996 Olympics, before funding was introduced.
Chris Boardman acclimatized to the Atlanta humidity by training on a stationary bike in his bathroom. Athletes were selling their medals from previous championships to fund the next one.
don’t they have some stupid policy of only taking people with medal potential or future medal potential?
.And some think the USATF is bad. Just imagine them doing this to their athletes.......
Yeah if USATF was run like this, they probably wouldn't have taken 2021 Molly Seidel (bronze medal), 2016 Paul Chelimo (Silver medal), or Trevor Bassitt last year in the 400H (bronze medal). You never know who might be a surprise medalist or develop experience to be one in the future.

I doubt UKA would have let Bill Mills run the Tokyo Olympics either. Textbook difference in American vs. British culture right here. American idealism leads to taking a lot of bold, sometimes stupid, shots at big goals that work out every once and awhile. History tends to remember the successful results more than the failures.
Same with Leticia Oro Melo in the long jump. She wasn't even high enough in the world rankings this year until she competed in the recent London Diamond League and last year wasn't really high up in the world rankings either, but she showed up in the woemn's long jump and got a PR in qualifying and then came to the final and won a bronze medal by 1cm, jumping another PR.
It's extra punishing and short sighted as for non US athletes, brands usually only want you if you're making world/Olympic teams.
Look at someone like Eilish McColgan. She was nominated for BBC Sports Personality of the year last year and became a star in the UK after her commonwealth and European medals. At world's/Olympics she has often struggled to make the 5k final and generally met some cynical criteria for being a "tourist" to most of the major champs of her career. The same goes for Jake Wightman (didn't even make the final in London 2017).
Would those two have been able to secure meaningful sponsorship to stay in the sport if they were never selected? Would they have been able to stick around to give us those great moments in 2022?
Wightman was 28 in Eugene, McColgan was 31.
The more athletes you keep in the system the more chances of later bloomers.

This sort of model doesn't work.
You have missed the point.
Those with the std who are not to be selected should go on the basis they pay the costs.
Imagine being so impoverished you can't cover the cost for an athlete to fly from London to Budapest, a couple nights in a hotel, and a modest per-diem.
Random D3 schools can pay for their athletes to fly further distances than that to meets in CA and the UK can't? Pathetic.

The brits have unlimited resources to support the leeching lifestyles of the so-called "royals." The brits spend zero on dentistry. The brits, even though they are a third world shthole, should have enough to send their athletes. All they need to do is defund the "royals" the way they have dentists.

Just looked up the Lina’s results and she actually ran under the standard right before the qualifying period opened. So it is not like she has never shown the potential to be under this time. She literally did it last year.
The people claiming cause she’s 27 she’s an over the hill tourist are just as pathetic as UKA.
I did the same and by looking at her flat 400m time she should be a bit quicker in the 400 hurdles. Lina and her sisters have a vlog of their training and in my opinion both need a coaching change.

You nailed it!!! Why should we trust old UK hacks medal predictions? Send all the invited runners.

Nothing to do with the misappropriation of taxable income by the government, such that world class athletes don't get a chance to compete, then? They are employed by the state to represent their country, and don't get picked because there isn't the money. Meanwhile, our Prime Minister buys a house for £3.5m cash while the majority of the country struggle to afford to pay their rent or get on the housing ladder. I pray your comment is indicative of your not living in the UK.
Great attitude. We should adopt this line of thinking in the US too, right? Young Sydney was running 54's in the 400H in 2016. She didn't even make it to the finals in Rio. She was a solid 2 seconds off of the podium. Practically a tourist.
So I guess we can have exceptions for young, promising athletes. So older, more experienced athletes who have worked hard for years, sacrificing all that they have to in order to be at or near the top of their sport, finally qualifies for a World Champ or Olympic team but we tell them "sorry, you won't medal anyway so you're efforts were for naught."
Great way to grow the sport.
Yes. Dont waste public money on people without potential. Use it to support athletes with a future. Grow the sport? There are not even 100 people who want to see a mediocre shot putter. Everyone comes to see someone like keely
Ah, yes, the YouTube generation. Maybe we should pick those world class athletes who Simon Cowell votes through.
If you can't even beat other Americans in a meet that matters, why would you go to Worlds in an event that has way more people with the standard/rankings (that are also able to go to Worlds) in the US that do show up? Otherwise, what's the point in the national championships if it isn't important enough to compete in? If you finish in the top 3 but don't have the standard or World rankings, we just pick the highest placing person that does.
We would never deny a person who has an opportunity to go to Worlds, if they truly are one of our best athletes in an event.
We do things like this because we have about 10-20 people in certain events with the standard and about 20-30 in the world rankings. Literally every person in GB that has the world rankings competed in the national championships too. They showed up and beat all the best people in their country (or almost everyone if they were 2nd/3rd). They deserve to compete.
