Oh shoot, thank you. You just dispelled a myth for me. Looks like it disrupts metabolism of carbs and fat by prioritizing alcohol metabolism. So, the calories from the beer or the sugary alcohol pauses while it metabolizes the alcohol. So, I guess the answer to the OPs question is to find lower calorie drinks, drink fewer of them, and also be aware of what else you are putting in your body while drinking - maybe more protein and water.
Consume a caloric deficit 4x a week, maintenance 2x, and a small (200 calorie) surplus 1x. This is called zig-zag dieting, and it works.
Provided you consume a balanced diet, it matters less what you consume. Again, balanced, hit your macros and micros.
balanced exercise, as well. If you’re a runner, run. Do some strength training. Not too much. Some sprints. Not too many, if you are a distance runner.

Most people have no way of knowing what a caloric deficit would be. Most people could not tell you how many calories they ate. Most people will not go through the trouble of trying to determine how many calories everything is and add it up. The only way you can do this is if you live in a frickin nutrition lab.
Mid 30s, been super lean my whole life weighting within 10 pounds of what I weighed in high school. Never made an effort to be light, it was just my natural homeostasis based on being active and not being a gigantic eater.
Had an injury this last year and finally gained some unwanted weight around my midsection. Probably 5-10 lbs? It just looks pudgy and gross.
What's the best way to reverse that? I'm healthy now so I can be active again.
Some combination of strength/cardio/no junk food?
Every longtime LetsRun poster knows the answer to this.
Running makes you skinny fat, it just does.
If you want to actually get in shape and lose the skinny fat, you have to do....
Ditto on reducing refined carbs. As I've gotten older brown rice is the only the grain that still tastes good. I could eat brown rice, eggs and greens for every meal.
Cut down your beer drinking too. At least switch from craft beers to miller lite.
Good point on the beer. I hope beersandmiles chimes in. He's a beer drinker and a super-fast 2:22 guy with a high tolerance lol. Strong legs and a strong liver!
What about alcoholic seltzer instead of beer? I just recently learned about those and they are way less caloric.
Obviously with the caveat that no drinking is still better.
Wait what?! Definitely a hard NO on this idea. 1 IPA nightly will have almost zero effect - you could actually argue that this would be healthy. Just don't drink 3-4 IPAs everyday. Drink more water, and stick with the black coffee.
Said predecessors also died early, often of diphtheria, cholera, small pox, infections and what not, and were literally apes before that, so it’s not obvious that they were all that smart.
They were arguably stupider than most of us moderns.
You’re at the age of manopause. The ball starts to roll down sometimes at that age, so feed efficiency just might not be what it used to be. Or maybe that’s not what your case is? Just do what you’ve done all your life but average a few hundred at least up to 3-5k fewer calories every week, up to 1-2 lbs total weight loss per week, and don’t sit around 100% of the time, use the muscles for something vigorous at least 1-2 times a week besides running or couch surfing. Idk what your hobbies are

Yes, a combination of cardio and basic strength and a cleaner diet. As you get older you might want to eat fewer grains. For strength, focus on multi joint movements. If you're not focused on distance running performance then sprints will help as well.

Sprints help distance performance.
True, but I was suggesting (perhaps not clearly) that if the OP is not concerned with performance but rather just concerned with fitness and looks he might replace a distance run with another form of high intensity cardio session like sprints.

Average brain size has decreased in the last 10K years, and if you aren't consuming at least a pound of ruminant meat a day you are quite SIMPly dumber than all of them. You would almost certainly perish in days or weeks in a.hunter gatherer situation.

Can’t care about your stupid religion. I’m not in a hunter gatherer situation, but you sound like you might be.
