As a longtime board reader, one of the things that I’ve always found peculiar is that any time a prominent runner loses a race or underperforms, there are posters who are quick to say that runner is devastated and/or their career is over. These posters often seem to be delighted to see those runners fail.
Hence my question: Is there ANY runner who letsrun posters would unanimously be sad to see lose?
Seth Demoor.
What would so many jealous hobbyjoggers in this forum do in their free time once he's gone?

Some people are just bitter and take delight in others losing. My guess is that those same people take delight in the misfortunes of others outside of athletics as well. Those losers find joy in a business that fails, someone that they know that flunked out of professional school, someone that gets in some sort of accident, etc. Those people are toxic and losers. It's best to steer clear of them. Life is full of these types of toxic chuckleheads.
To answer the question, there isn't anyone that I am "sad" to see lose. As someone else mentioned, sad is a bit strong. That said, there are some that I am disappointed to see struggle.
I was disappointed to see Ajee Wilson do so poorly in the NYC 800 this past weekend. I hope it's just an anomaly and not something going on with her.
I was disappointed to see Natalie Cook struggle this past year. Watching her in the indoor 5000 was hard to see. I hope she finds her way back to the top.
I was disappointed to see Katelyn Tuohy do so poorly in the NCAA 1500 final. I've got to think that something was going on with her and she will be back.
I was disappointed when Devon Allen had the suspicious DQ in the WC heats last because he started .001 too fast. That it happened during a meet when all sorts of questionable incidents occurred with the timing system made it worse.
I've been disappointed to see Anavia Battle's & Favour Ofili's struggle this season after having such a promising year last year. Battle seems to be getting some of her form back but Ofili is still struggling.
Sad, to me, is different.
Sad is when Tori Bowie died during childbirth at only 32 years of age.
Sad is learning that Roisin Willis is struggling with her mental health. It is promising that she is addressing the issue, though.
The "goes home devastated" joke is funny because it's intentionally over the top. That's the joke. It was ridiculous the first couple uses but now people use it tongue in cheek.

That may be but there are still those that like seeing others lose, and even get pleasure out of it, for some twisted reason.
I feel like Meb is universally loved. His wins were more of a surprise than his losses though.
I think you need to be someone whose wins are more of a surprise than losses because favorites will always have someone cheering against them, and on top of that you need to be generally-liked. Meb is thus a great call, because we was never really a favorite on a personal level, who doesn't like the guy.
A current runner like Luis Grijalva sort of fits the same bill. He is generally liked and if he ever actually won a global gold medal the Board would be pretty exuberant. But if he lost it wouldn't be a big deal. That being said, if he did get to the very top, some people on the Board would definitely turn against him in future races.

You are 100% correct and I love your post. This forum needs like 50 more of you. Thank you for a) understanding human pyschology, b) being a good fan of the sport, and c) putting things like sports/death in perspective.
p.s. I wonder if anyone here hates Laura Muir? I think she is great (though no Kipyegon, to be sure). I am sure I'd be bummed to see her fail considering she gives 110% every time she races!
