That was probably his last individual race as a college athlete.
Can he make the 2023 world team? I wouldn't bet against him.
He would quit the coach that got him this far?
He probably still wants a college education, and I imagine if he tries to balance courses with the diamond league, it would not be an easy fall. He should take at least another year
I'm not saying he should drop out of college. He can be a pro runner and still take college classes.
He’s a smaller guy, which is my lone concern. He’s got all the tools you need.
I thought so too by looking at him running but he's listed as 6'1'' and 170lbs.
He’s bigger than I realized, he’s got sprinter legs and if you look at the flotrack victory post he’s actually gotten a pretty muscular physique since highschool. I would’ve put him at 150-155 looking at him back then. I’m not 100% sure but I believe Georgia spends a lot of time in the weight room, as boling also looks to weigh +\- 15 lbs more than he did in HS.
I think it’s a good size for a 400/800m guy, tall and bulky leads to a powerful stride that covers a lot of ground, obviously not the most aerobically efficient but when you are racing for <2:00 and rarely <4:00 you don’t need to worry about that a ton. A 4/8 guys goal is to gap a field enough that they can’t catch him over the last 100m or so.
He's very good at the 800m but he would be great in a championship 1500m.
Why?
he is a 400/800 type
I mean in a slow sit and kick I’m sure he would dominate, think rio 2016, I’d bet Sumner could run the second fastest guys 400m PR in a race like that, but you usually need to run a 3:33 or faster to make a final in the first place which he’d probably have a hard time with.
You have a concern over his size? Are you planning on dating him or are you assessing his running future?
Seb Coe wasn't exactly big and he did pretty good in the 800. Fer crissakes...
[ now we need someone to find a flaw in his form. I'm sure SprintGeezer is up to the task]
Lol, don’t take it so harshly. I’m a little worried he’ll get bumped around/shuffled out back in championship 800 races. And it did happen to Coe. The 800 can get mighty physical and look we’ve seen Bryce have some trouble with the physicality. I am extremely high on Sumner, I didn’t mean major offense.
And here I was thinking the men's 800 would be a stale event for the next few years without a Brazier or a Rudisha... always been a huge fan of Will Sumner since his HS days so this is amazing to see. Cannot wait for him to mix it up with Wanyonyi on the world stage soon!

Finals at UGA this year ended May 9th. The first Diamond League meet was May 5th.

Does it really matter when at 19 you can drop a 51 after a tactical 53?

He’s not 6’1 nor 170.
like 5’8 145
he's taller than 5'8" for sure. 6'1" seems pretty accurate to me, having seen him in person. also closer to 170 than 145, too
