So he opens when you decide he opens? I thought he ran like a 1:56 800m and 4:06 mile in February.
Heyooo, big dog has entered the chat!
Outdoors chief, outdoors: Training cycles, periodization, peaking - do you know about that stuff? Centro has a consistent pattern and buildup that has delivered results, annually, well beyond any other American miler in the last decade plus.
Yeah, big dog, the 1:56 and 4:06 were both outdoors. How are you big dog?
I feel like we've had this thread every Spring for at least 7-8 years and the haters and/or short-sighted chodes love to pile on Centro as if he's buried. I'm not saying he's running under 3:34 or winning a global medal again, but I would NEVER bet against him if he opens with a 3:40. Check the record dummies:
2011: 1:51+3:46 opener in April, 3:34 and WC Bronze in July/August
2012: 3:41 opener in June, OG 4th and 3:31 in August
2013: 3:42c opener in April, 3:33 in July and WC Silver in August
2014: 3:41 opener in April, 3:32 and 3:31 in July
2015: 3:42 opener in April, 3:30 in July and WC 8th in August
2016: 3:41 opener in June, OG Gold in August
2017: 13:48 opener in May, 3:34 in July
2018: 3:40 opener in May, 3:31 in July
2019: 3:37 opener in June, 13:00 in Sept and 3:32 for WC 8th in October
2021: 3:40 opener in March, 3:33 in OG Tokyo in August
2023: 3:40 opener in May...
Great collection of data. You left out his 3:49 mile in July 2021 though. Most people forget he PR’ed that late in his career

The PR was inferior to his 1500m though. So it is not exactly his best PR.
It’s because he always runs poor earlier in the year even in his best years. Yes he’s past his prime, but he could still make the Olympic team next year especially with Hocker seemingly disappearing off the face of the earth
Y’all really gotta understand this dude had Knee surgery at 32/33 years old. He ain’t a spring chicken. At 22/23 he would have Bounced right back but at his age he’s only 6 years from 40, it’s gonna take some time to get back to that shape. I would take my sweet time just like he’s doing because if he rushes this and gets hurt to that extent again you can best believe it’s time to hang em up. Not everyone is going to go all the way to 40+ like Lagat did, centro may but Kip never had a major surgery during his peak years. Look how long Wheatings been out the game and he was only a year or so older than centro. Look what injuries have done to rupp.
Centro put himself in the B heat, he isn’t coming into this stupidly with ego, he’s thinking about the next few years, y’all just gotta chill 3:40 is solid at this point, we’ve seen this before, next race he will go 3:37/38 and then be ready for USAs. I don’t see him making the team but I’m sure he if he makes the final he will give it a crack. Lastly, where is 10 yr younger hocker? Exactly

My brother in christ, he ran those in Feb in The Land Down Undah, during what would normally be indoor season and that portion of his training calendar. I get it that you're hung up on those singular results as being some impactful outlier, but he's raced plenty of times (with varying results) in February before. The point is: early season doesn't count for much, Centro has repeatedly proven that and clowns like you need to keep your mouth shut in the Spring and see what happens with the real cards are in play.
I don't really even like Centro that much, but his proven track record of a decade plus of fast times and consistent global performances demands respect. Just like with Rupp - the message board chuckleheads love to heap doubt and disrespect on the two most consistent and most decorated American-born distance runners of the 2000's. Laughable.
Cue the AlSal+burrito comments, thanks in advance.

I suspect you are the kind of person who thinks age and injuries don’t matter. They do. You can stick a fork in both Centro and Galen. The glory days are over. It was once a mistake to count out either. It no longer is.

Cool cool, strong take and glad we have you on the case here. Like I said "I'm not saying he's running under 3:34 or winning a global medal again." ie: I'm not suspecting each setting PR's or the glory days coming back, but I would not be so triggered to write them off, at least at a national level.
Championship racing, not TT PR's, is Centro's jam. Rupp, despite injuries and age, has shown up for big occasions. He was the top American, by 2min, in 2:09 at World's in Eugene last summer, along with a 2:06 and an 8th at the Olympics (again, 5min ahead of the next American) in Tokyo the year before.

3:36 called and wanted your take, wise one. The march continues.
