I was active duty for 8 years. We had a guy in my division that was a reservist like 42 years old or something and he was abused because of his age. It was not a physical thing it was the younger guys bullying him to nearly suicide. At 62 years of age, you would be a sitting duck. You can try and convince yourself that you can handle it mentally, but you would break with a bunch of 18–26-year-olds just mentally toying with you daily. Calling you every name known to man to picking on you about failing at life and needing to join the military so late to just be able to have a paycheck. The instructors calling you things like old failure, grey nuts, and saying things like why does it smell like a mausoleum in here? Oh right because of the Private Corpse! Hey Crypt Keeper, are you having a heart attack! Also, to think because you are 62 and in good shape well, I can tell you a fit 18-year-old actually a typical 18-year-old would mop the floor with you if you pissed him off in boot.
Disagree I heard Dan Gable was able to beat Wrestlers in the Iowa Wresting Team Room in his 60's, Myron Roderick was Famous for Challenging and beating Wrestlers well into his 50's when he was Athletic Director at Oklahoma State, he always challenged Wrestlers Including NCAA Champions (He himself was a 3 Time NCAA Champion when they were only allowed 3 years of eligibility) to take him down, he was ridiculously good on his feet and It was extremely rare for him to be taken down.
Don Gable was 117-1 in college. He put the hurt on most of his wrestling mates.

If Dan Gable and these wrestlers all slept for 20 minutes each night on concrete and wrestled on day 7 of living like this most if not all of them would break his neck.
You can't endure the rigors of living in the field or combat when you're 62 no matter how healthy you are.
The 63 year old Naval officer will never sleep on anything but a bed and would never be within 150 miles of combat.
Been in the Army. Infantry guys tend to be more "fit" if you could call it that. Most of the rest are NOT in shape. I am way too old to go back in but I can assure you I would fare very well against many/most that are not in infantry.

Nobody's more fit then those navy seals that run 7 miles down the trail in Virginia Beach and then swim out to the ship waiting for them.
An older man or woman could be allowed in uniform in U.S. military but not in the manner the majority of you are discussing.
If there is a project, the project is shopped around to c.i.a., U.S. Department of State and then the project is placed in Department of Defense, for example N.B.C. If the most respected N.B.C. civilians with PhD are approached and they team up together and agree, if they all insist on being commissioned officers, exceptions will be made. If the top civilian mathematicians and natural scientists who worked on Manhattan Project all insisted on being made commissioned officers, they would have been made commissioned officers. If D.o.D., during a war, real war are short general surgeons, it is possible there will be 62 year old general surgeons in U.S. military. If forensic accountants are needed to figure out how Ukrainian President, President Z is laundering money and the project is given to D.o.D., it is possible 62 year old M.S. Accounting gals and guys would be in U.S. military. O.P., if you do not have a master degree, m.d., PhD or law degree, it will not happen.

How do you know that if the military has never allowed a 60+ yr old to join?
I would think the armed forces would be thrilled to get anyone in great shape to sign up, regardless of age, since less & less young people want anything to do with the military these days.
C'mon man - a $50,000 signing bonus for the Army!?! 🤯

I'm pretty sure George Washington was over 60 when they made him a general again. That was shortly before he died.
He may have had experience, but he was retired and had just been president for 8 years.
Does anyone think an army run by George Washington and George Patton wouldn't be the baddest ever? That's like Genghis Khan level.
General Omar Bradley served on active duty continuously from August 1, 1911, until his death on April 8, 1981 – a total of 69 years, 8 months and 7 days. His was the longest active duty career in the history of the United States Armed Forces.
The young nightmare fellow is the typical type who shoots off their mouth to an older guy, then learns a valuable lesson of not judging others by age. I tend to believe most gents and ladies on this board would not take s$i! from an 18 yr old punk for long.

Would not the senior officers put an end to such abuse? The bullying?
No they would not they would encourage it, especially if they consider you weak!
I can promise you that you are not more physically fit than anyone in the Army. What you are listening to is your old man ego that is trying to convince you that you are!!!
You seem upset about something, as if it were actually you that got bullied and traumatized.

I can actually tell you were never in the military. The old guy especially if they ever allowed a 62-year-old to join would be viewed as a failure in society to those in his platoon unless as noted he was a specialized officer, he would not enter service as a private. A 62-year-old private would be destroyed by other privates that are 25 and younger.
