So, a mark of how eager Ellie Shea is ... she is the only athlete in the country, of any age or event, to have already registered for the USATF (in her case U20) championships July 6th-9th -- and she's done it in 4 events (1500, 3000, steeplechase, 5000). She is just raring to get her career into full gear!
Looks to me like an organized, committed and competitive athlete appearing to have fun! Maybe she figures she might as well get her money’s worth, if making that cross-country trip.
Any athlete paying to race has their personal running ‘career’, regardless of how far or what level of competition. The motivation, training and commitment becomes amplified as soon as an athlete signs up to race. She seems to have learned that by now.
Hulst is well-remembered in the running community for his high-risk training regimen. At the age of 15, Hulst logged 100 miles per week of training, and would often get up at 5:00 AM to run between 10 and 13 miles before classes started at 8:30.[5] His morning runs would start from Emerald Bay to Corona del Mar and back, and would frequently wear a 10-pound lead vest.*
During his senior year of high school, Hulst won the gold medal at the 1976 IAAF World Cross Country Championships men's junior race.

Her birthday is September 6th per World Athletics. Using the department of education database, of the 50 states plus DC, 45 of them have a statewide age requirement for entering kindergarten (the rest leave it up to districts). Of those 45, she would be "old" for her grade in only 9 of them (Colorado 10/1, Connecticut 1/1, DC 9/30, Iowa 9/15, Louisiana 9/30, Maine 10/15, Nevada 9/30, Virginia 9/30, Wyoming 9/15).
Is she on the "older side" of her grade, sure. But there is a difference between that and being "old for your grade", which someone like Lukas Verzbicas was until he graduated after 3 years.
That's a pretty typical age for a senior in high school. They turn 18 anytime between the start and end of the school year. Though that is on the earlier side, it's not like she was held back or is super old. Certainly not unusual.
Hugely talented athlete. Add how she gets there to the list of issues in HS Track right now. Spending 9k a year plus another 10k on travel etc. will only lead to more athletes demanding the same from their support group to keep up. Never once touching a high school singlet or relay baton is something if I were a college coach would lead me to hesitate in taking this athlete on board.
Sounds like you would not have taken Margot Appleton of Emerging Elites who just finished 4th in the NCAA mile as a soph. One of many reasons why Lananna is her coach and not you. And I am sure he would sign Shea to a full ride in a heartbeat.
She doesn't attend prep school. She attends Belmont High School, which a public high school that participates in both indoor and outdoor track in the Middlesex League in eastern Mass.
