For Boling to move up to the next level, he’ll need to learn how to run relaxed. If you look at any of the great sprinters, you’ll never see any strain on their faces.
On this point, time for him to move up to the 400. He has a much better shot of making a national team at 400.
Yes. Also LJ. Not as glam, but at least he has a shot.
He’s basically already there as far as the long jump is concerned. He isn’t consistent and isn’t going to scare Tentoglou, Gayle or the Cubans with a 8.25 best, but it puts him in the conversation.
M B just needs to sprint a 200m p.b. at USA's in final, about 19.89. M B would have to improve significantly as a 400m guy which would likely ruin his long jumping ability.
As a 200m guy, M B can do Feed the Cats type training. Four-hundred meter training requires short duration intervals and running to muscle failure. Four-hundred meter training is just the type of training which destroys jumping ability.
Excellent win for Boling. A national team outdoors is still tough since there were still six runners faster than him in. Does that mean moving up in the 400m?
2022 Top US Mens 200m
Noah Lyles 19.31
Erriyon Knighton 19.49
Michael Norman 19.76
Kenny Bednarek 19.77
Fred Kerley 19.80
Christian Coleman 19.92
Matt Boling 19.92
not to mention there is no 4 x 200m relay
his goal should be to run in an olympics...period. thats the pinnacle of any career. he's never going to medal or break a world record, but making the olympic team, being in Paris or LA...thats an experience of a lifetime.
he should focus on the 400m for the trials. he doesnt even need to be top 4 (they bring along 6 i believe for the relays).

Now make a list of M Boling's 400m ranking. Do you have an evidence M Boling can be a top 6 U.S. 400m man? Do you have a 600m time or a 400m TT? Btw., a country can place a man from another event such as 400mH or 800m. There is no guarantee the top 6 400m men at USA's would be on 4 x 400m relay. Could be, top 5 plus a 400mH athlete.
He will still get killed outdoors 😂. USA 200m deepest in history
It’s ok to “just” be the ncaa champion. Doesn’t have to be the best 200m runner in the USA or world.
This will probably sound elitist and dick-ish, but here it is anyway…
When you get to a certain level, you want it all, because you can see it. I can guarantee NCAA champ isn’t enough for Boling personally, and why he is motivated and continues to improve.
Never being satisfied but still being gracious in both victory and defeat while you are still competing are part of being a champion.
Four-hundred meter training is just the type of training which destroys jumping ability.
In 99.9% of cases, this is absolutely true, but there can be exceptions, like we have seen in TJ, LJ, etc.
But you are so right…but if he had to pick, what do you think would be his better shot? For me that’s a tough question, esp if Norman and Kerley bow out of the 4.
8.25 LJ while not specializing is very good.
Who knows! I wish he would do it, though: pivot. Worked for Kerley!

You may be right, but distance training definitely kills "ups." There've been studies.
I was never a jump-out-of-the-gym guy, but could get to the rim reliably in HS. When I became a "serious" distance runner, I was barely able to clear the free throw line.

Clear the free throw line? I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but I could easily dunk throughout my whole distance running career and even 10+ years later.
I am sure you have sprinted 200m dash more than I have. Many elite 200m dash gals & guys as you know sprint first 100m about 15/16 effort then go for it from 100m to (175 to 190)m then manage deacceleration over the final (25 to 10)m.
2022 USAs, I watched the 200m several times. I also studied 10m segments for all in 200m dash final from 100m to 200m.
I came up with three possibilities for M Boling & 200m, summer, 2022:
* Deaccelerated worse than some of the others over final 25m due to long N.C.A.A. indoor & outdoor, T&F seasons.
* Maybe Matt B is an inferior 300m man compared to most of the other men at USAs, 2022? I do not know?
* Maybe Matt B gets too tight psychologically in big races? Is it possible for him to relax his face and upper body in order to allow the speed to come out?
If I recall, Matt B's issues at USA was not the first 100m. Wasn't he in top 4 or 5 at 100m mark? If I recall Matt B was sprinting fairly well from 100m to 150m. If I recall, some of the guys went to another level from 150 to 175 or so and Matt B's deacceleration. I see a lot of room for improvement.
Boling gets most his attention because he is a rarity here in the USA a male caucasion sprinter. Something the SEC has never had,
Will he become a major player on the world stage? Obviously not in the 100m, and he's showed nothing to have us thinking here is a 19.6 or faster athlete and 19.9's just won't cut it.
His claim to fame will be the best sprinter ever seen at Georgia, but that's going to be about it.
NFL should be a consideration for MB especially with the spread offenses and millions to be earned. Skeets, Brown, Gault were Olympians and there were others. Tyrek Hill is at times unstoppable and MB is faster at 100 although I don’t know their 40 times

Only 800 or 400mh US athlete that should be considered for the relay is Rai Benjamin. As for Bolings prospects in the open 4, he lead off in 45.2 at SECs and 45.3 at NCAAs with little rest from the 200. He also finished 0.04 behind Godwin at the Dr Martin Luther King Invitational. With Kerley and Norman mainly gone from the 400 and Randolph Ross suspended, its the best event for him to make.
