I immediately thought of Reed Fischer.
I believe he's like 32, and he finished 10th in New York this year (2:15:23).
Finishing 10th is a great finish. It's $2000 dollars in prize money though.
I don't think he needs to retire. No, the sport will weed itself out; because that's a lot of months and hours spent training for a $2000 dollar pay day.

I assume they knew going in that if they weren't at the absolute top of the top, then life was going to be what it is. So I say make the most of it while they can.
