Been through this a million times. You can search threads for the arguments.
re: 154 lbs…yeah he’s heavier than that, but it is surprising how light some of these guys can be. At York Ben hopped on the changeroom scale when he was big. The result? 180 on the nose (it was still in lbs). I hopped on right after: 184. He was a bit bulkier than me, but cut to all hell. I was blown away by the 180, I was sure he went 190 at least.
How much do you think Gay weighed at his peak form? Or Flake at his maximum in-form bulk? Or Coleman right now? They’re surprisingly light and often thin-boned. Great for power:weight ratio👍
It’s great that Norman will compete in the 100, we will get to see if he can repeat or better his 9.86.
What a US 100m field, they could have the two top 4x1 teams in the world. Don’t sell Kerley short, he’s faster than you think. He’s like a bigger, faster, slightly less quick Coleman, and his improvement and consistency in the 9.7’s has been nothing short of epic. IMO he could hit the AR this year if he stays healthy, and I can’t see Norman at that level in his first serious 100m season.
And Lyles, he’s Carl Lewis 2.0. How many times has he re-run CL’s Tokyo race?! He could easily get lucky and bust a 9.8-low under good conditions, and he’s a determined competitor. Since he’s so close to 19.19 and still improving, I see him as focusing on the 200, with the 100m as secondary. The 200 is his race, like Lewis—who could have had the WR had he run through the line. How great would it be for anyone to better one of Dolt’s records, that would be an instant conferral of historic greatness.
He is on the cusp.
What an embarrassment of sprint riches for the US. Just think about the 200 — Lyles, Knighton, Kerley, Norman , etc—imagine if they all specialized in the distance!
Wow, wtf. Maybe the fastest-ever 100m final this year at nats.
