Thank you, I. Rex.You're the only poster so far who "get's it" and see's the bigger picture regarding next month's World XC U20 women's race and how intriguing and exciting it is going to be.
Future Stanford teammates Bunnage and Riggs in a real competition against the best of the rest of the world is the real story looking forward . . . not hypothetical arithmetic gymnastics involving older women who won't be there.
Last week, Bunnage ran 20:20 on a hilly 6k course in warm weather to win by 80 seconds over the best teenage Aussie gals. Last month, she ran a track 3k in almost 9-flat. Both performances indicate she is likely amoungst the best U20 distance women in the world. And, she'll have the advantage of not having to travel as well as having virtually all the attending fans rooting for her.
Meanwhile, Riggs ran more than a half-minute faster but on a flat course with much better competition in cooler weather. Rigg's 9:50 2-mile is a little slower than a 9 min 3k but was run 7 months earlier.
So, here is what makes this past week of xc racing so exciting as we look forward:
-> Is it beyond the realm of possibility to believe Bunnage and Riggs can break up the Ethiopean-Kenyan hegemony and place top-10 in Bathurst next month?
-> Could either of them be good enough to "pull a Ritz" and medal?
-> Is the US U20 women's team good enough to "pull a miracle on dirt" to get on the podium?
For US and Aussie xc fans, this past week couldn't have gone any better.
