Did you read that article? It says that the study of Dutch cyclists that
low bone density particularly affected women early in their careers, while it impacted both men and women in the later stages of their careers.
In riders during the early stages of their careers, it was women who showed higher rates of low bone density in their lumbar spines with 45 percent compared to 27 percent of men.
For riders who had completed their careers...and were aged over 50 with at least one year since their retirement — 50 percent of the men had low bone density while just 20 percent of the women did.
This thread is about the reduced bone density and other problems that LF pointed out many young female runners experience due to lack of ovarian function in their teens and early 20s - when they are of the age to be in late MS, HS and college/uni.
Due to factors such as over-training and lack of adequate nutrition leading to an unhealthily low body weight, some of these girls and women who were very into running as teenagers did not go through female puberty of adolescence when they should have at all. As a result, they never built up healthy bone density during the crucial developmental window in their teens when adult bone density normally is acquired.
Others of these female runners started female puberty of adolescence in their teens when they should have, but their ovaries ceased functioning soon afterwards - so they still lost out on the chance to build proper adult bone density at the appropriate time in their teens.
By contrast, the male cyclists in the story you linked to all have undergone and are well past male puberty of adolescence when they presumably acquired healthy adult male bone density. Particularly the guys over 50.
At any rate, please enough with the obvious attempt to switch the topic of this thread to men. If you want to focus on fellas, today as always there are plenty of other threads on LRC where you can do just that.
