I too had a guy who could run great times off of no training. when he did try to up his mileage (even gradually), he always got injured or burnt out and his times would suffer.
by contrast, I knew a second guy who had a 'talent' for sustaining serious mileage. He didn't burn out or get injured. Without training, his times were awful compared to the first guy. however, by the end of high school, his times had surpassed the first guy's.
When you're talking about high school runners you really can't draw conclusions. Often these semi phenomenal performances are from kids who are at the high end of the growth curve and have little room for improvement.
