To be clear - it was SF Parks Dept who ordered the event not to be run under any of the large Eucalyptus trees after a MASSIVE tree fell on the course. It could easily have killed people so they were rightfully wary that it would happen again. Unfortunately, those trees are everywhere in the park. The officials made the best of a terrible situation and just ran around the polo fields. What else could they have done other than cancel the whole thing?
Typical stupid thread by typically stupid letsrun people who have no idea on what was going on. A tree or branches did fall during the men’s 60+ race and apparently someone was injured. I was in the race. Upthread someone said several were killed, I don’t know if that’s valid or not but did hear the ambulance and an account from another competitor who was nearby when it happened.
The tree that fell was enormous and easily could have killed someone.
Honestly, they made the best of a bad situation and while it was certainly less than ideal, I had a ton of fun out there and this won’t be a race I will soon forget. FWIW, I went very wide on a few of the turns to get around folks and my watch had 5.99.
Actual loop is .77 Miles long. If the actual curve was 1/4 of the loop then the total 7.75 loops equals out to 5.9675 miles.
What about if you ran the tangents perfectly?
Impossible. :-) It was so wet -- gale warning was in effect from the weather service -- that the inside was flooded. I ran it and I was probably 10-15 feet from the inside on average during the race.
I’m sure he’s been waiting his whole life for an XC course that’s run on a track.
I was out there today (watching). it might not have been an xc course, but it was xc weather. Congratulations to all the runners for braving the elements and making a go of it.
I didn't say people were killed, I said it was 20 feet in a different direction from landing on a Team's tent and killing them and close to wiping out the registration/starting line too. The guy who was injured wasn't injured due to the tree. I understand he wiped out on a down hill and hit his head. In the end, the storm passes and they could've run the original course. But Parks Dept wouldn't allow that.

An impressive run by Hocker regardless of the final distance. Quite a bit of the loop was still muddy. 28 mins for a full 10k by a miler in the early stages of the season, and he is still only 21

Only brought spikes so had to avoid the hard pack and run in the mud on the inside of the track for the whole race. My gps had 5.8 on the dot. So quite a bit shorter then 10k. However those that avoided the mud probably got closer to 5.9-6.0 miles as they had to run wide of the inside line. Though they probably ran more of a road race then cross country race.
