Would have been a brisk day in comparison to NCAA's in 2000. I couldn't feel my legs that day.
Held on November 20, 2000, the combined meet was hosted by Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The distance for the men's race was 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) while the distance for the women's race was 6 kilometres (3.7 mi). This championship was one of the coldest on record with 20 miles per hour (32 km/h) winds holding wind chills around 0 °F (−18 °C) at race time.
I looked at photos from 2018 when the weather was about the same but the ground was snow covered which made it seem even more winter like. Nearly all of the top women wore bun huggers and a singlet and gloves.
What size spikes do they wear in a race like that where there is a some snow cover? 3/8?
Concerned about weather for a freakin cross country race?! Only in wimpy America
No, what's going on here is that a supposed hot favorite is from Florida and has probably never worn a cap or gloves in their life. Nor run a hill with more than 4 or 5 feet of elevation gain.
This same situation is not quite so prevalent in the men's race, though somehow a favorite from Thousand Oaks, CA, is not at all questionable in cold weather as they attend NAU.
I agree, the CA and FL runners are ill-prepared for those conditions. If Tuohy beats Valby, then Valby supporters will be able to point to the weather as the determining factor that was in Tuohy’s favor. If Valby prevails, then Tuohy fans can use Tuohy’s hamstring issue as the excuse. Either way, the debates will rage on until track season.
Letsrun is the only one benefiting from all of it.

She has run in some cooler places - though she wore far warmer attire than most. She finishes in 20:12 I believe.
Yeah all teams will have to run in it but perhaps the currently #1 ranked teams of Stanford and NC State might have a slightly harder time in the conditions compared to the altitude schools.
I recall Colorado, New Mexico, NAU, and BYU running well last time it was cold in Wisconsin a few years back. How many points would you “handicap” Stanford or NC State compared to the field in these conditions? 0, 15, 30+?
For the individual title, has someone like Parker Valby even been in temps where it "feels like 22" before?
I ran in the 1978 NC's held in Madison, WI. The weather was similar. It was 20 degrees with a crust of snow on the ground. It did not make a big difference--the teams (IMHO) fared the same as if it was milder. Don't overdress!

30's is not bad. I think everyone is making too big a deal about how this will affect Southern runners. Valby isn't in Honolulu or even Miami, she's in Gainesville.
Neither temp or snow factored in Rono's performance that day. WSU as a team intentionally tanked. I ran by Rono in the first half mile and he was just jogging.
BTW, Rono won in Spokane the year before. Temp at race time was 7. Spectators were standing on one of the ponds adjacent to the course.
Curios to know the story about WSU as a team intentionally tanking and why.
Not sure. Rumor was the team (all Kenyan I believe) was pissed at their coach John Chaplan for some reason.
Remember, a handful of NC State's top 7 hail from Northeast, and spent years running in similar conditions. Had the pleasure of watching Touhy and Chmiel battle it out for NYS championship on snow and frozen mud back in 2017. Tough as they come, the both of them.
