West Virginia needs to tighten up their 1-2 gap a bit. Does anyone know why grad transfer Rachel Butler is not running for the Mountaineers? She was listed on the race roster. Based on how she ran last cross season and in outdoor I thought she could have been a solid 2nd runner.

20:08 for McCabe W/Virginia; 20:10 for Roe; 20:16 Jepkuriui; 20:21 Cook; Hentemann Okstate 20:39; 2 x I-state (Hill and Feyen) at 20:41 and 20:42; Moss/OkSt at 20:52; Galvydyte/Okstate 20:59.
Yeah, but let's face it - the Kenyan is unlikely to be 19 or 20 years old.
It's funny to me that everyone complains about BYU (whose men seem to do practically zero running in their 2 year religious mission), but no-one says a word about the Kenyans that most Colleges pick up. They are generally much, much older than usual.
Maybe - could be mid or late 20's - who cares though? It's really not a big deal I think. For distinguishing Freshman/1st year maybe a consideration to be taken in to account. NCAA is an open adult competition, not an age group competition like high school.
I just find it curious that people go on about the BYU men, and stay extremely quiet about the much older African imports. Seems very hypocritical.

I'm not surprised by these results....
Great run for McCabe, Roe, & Jepkurui. I'm not surprised that Roe has progressed well ahead of Cook at this point. I don't believe the low mileage runners won't improve as much through the year. Who knows though...maybe a Nationals it will be different...but I wouldn't think so.

So the top 5 were all fairly even until the last km or so...then McCabe and Roe ran away from Jipkurui. Cook seems to have stayed with them until the last km as well, then fell off a fair amount.

After finally getting a chance to watch the full race, I am SUPER impressed with the OSU women. Roe, Jepkirui and Cook all ran essentially side-by-side the entire race with McCabe just biding her time running along with that trio. Navigating around puddles and tiny ‘lil hills they kept a great tempo and seemed to be completely comfortable all running together far ahead of the rest of the field. All 3 of the OSU women were still side-by-side until 5.5km, when all of a sudden, the videographers felt it was better to randomly watch the back of the pack instead of having the attention focused on the 4 leaders of the race. So about 5.8km, they finally panned back to the leaders but by that time McCabe had already pulled away, so we saw that after the fact. Her ability to close is incredible!
Takeaways from the race:
It was chilly (but not bad, @ 50-51 degrees F)
It was WET. Standing puddles everywhere! Multiple times you can see them literally running AROUND them.
It was windy.
Cook would have fallen at the finish had a finish line volunteer not helped her stay up.
Seeing OSU’s top-3 women have the ability to run together that fast for that long (essentially until the final 400 meters), is quite impressive. Roe is definitively #1 for them, Jepkirui is so close, Cook can’t hang in a final 400 meter kick.

Missing McCabe's decisive move was shocking but somehow not surprising, given how routinely poor these broadcasts are. Nats could easily become a viewing nightmare for many if the top two break away early and coverage absently reframes the event as a 1 v. 1 individual contest.
Congrats to the WVU team, quietly evolving from McCabe and a bunch of scrubs to a decent overall squad. The coach and XC program in general seem to be getting a lot of things right.

just one thing from my perspective conditions aside that is a fast course so the 20:00+ pace should have been comfortable and then the big sprint favors McCabe

Oh absolutely, it was without a doubt a fast course. Just real soggy and windy. On a warm, dry day with low-cut grass and low winds I’m sure these ladies would have run 19:20’s to 19:30’s actually. Yesterday, they were literally going out of their way to go around puddles, etc., quite a few times.
The 20:00+ pace seemed pretty comfortable for the entire group of 4 of them. However, looking at Cook at the finish, she was totally spent so it definitely took a lot out of her in those particular conditions yesterday. The race showed McCabe’s kick which is exactly what most of us thought would happen, and Cook’s weakness. It solidified that Jepkirui is legit and that Roe is Roe and often the non-champion due to lack of kick.
Great race. I thought going in Mccabe would probably win it, and when I saw the puddles (perfect for a steepler!) and the pace/km I knew she would drop everyone in the end with her kick. OK State is a great team, I think we will see even more from them on the home course.
