Maybe its time to forgive Jerry for sitting Withrow and getting 2nd. Just because the peanut gallery wants the freshman phenom in the race doesn't mean we know as much as the coach. Mea Culpa.
Colin’s pace at nationals last year would have been a 22:29 pace for 8k. Even accounting for course differences and the extra distance, 23:30 is a very conservative conversion.
I am definitely not a CS or NP fan. To me, the best hs xc runners of all time go Ritz, then Virgin, then everybody else.
That said, a 23:50 8k debut is not a bomb. This is the first time in 2 years CS had to run in tight traffic for a whole race. That is a tough adjustment.
He was about 40 secs behind Ky and Nico. If he can get that down to 30 secs in a 10k race he'll be an all-american and a positive impact for his team. Maybe he won't make up that time and he'll run 30:30 for 100th place at Nationals. So what?
Freshman xc is a crapshoot. Matt Tegencamp redshirted his freshman year and went on to be one of the fastest 5k Americans ever. Let the kid run through May before judging his freshman year.
60th is an embarrassment. He didn’t train this summer or he just went out too hard and paid for it. Look at Ritz’s True frosh XC season or even Diego Mercado’s: mixed it up with the big dogs and went for it. Reminds me of Verzbicas who bombed then quit Oregon soon after. If he can’t do it at 8k if he’s on the team at Natty’s with a 10k in the mud he will finish 150th. Interested to hear thoughts.
U cant make an accurate assessment from one race. The kids got talent. I just hope he doesn't turn into one of these over-hyped, over-trained and over-raced high school talents that burns out in the name of high school glory, but never has real results collegiately or professionally. A future hobby jogger by the age of 30. We have seen too many of those….I hope the best for his progress.
He didn’t bomb, he did just fine for his college XC debut. He was 1.6 seconds behind Tom Brady, a 7:55/13:48/28:46 guy in his 4th year of collegiate running. Seems about right for Sahlman. He also beat Brendan Fraser by 2 seconds. These two guys have had great success in their respective occupations.
NFL quarterback and Professional actor?
Agree though. This a good result for him. People need to relax a bit with the NP kids.
OP'er....if he runs what he ran his senior year in high school he is not a bust or bomb or whatever you are jealous of NP of. Heck...even if he runs what he ran his junior year. That is unless a 4:03 full mile sucks now. Just stop it now.
OP is for sure just trolling, because it’s it nuts take. First of all, get a life OP. The kid runs his first race and you want to put some nasty smearing junk on the board.
Secondly, notice how Sahlman’s place climbed and climbed at each split. You know, it was the first time he went out in a race packed with so many amazing runners. Maybe it turns out it was a learning experience, and he had to climb his way up to a better position. Guess what, he did.

And so, certainly this race showed promise.
For arguably the best prep runner in history? I don’t know. People were talking about him being too 20 at NCAA’s……LAST YEAR!!!

So what’s thr beef? With Sahlman or LR posters of last year. Because the OP’s trolling title is nasty to Sahlman. i found it pretty crappy. And yes, I stick to my take, he went out conservative (or surprised) in this race and still he climbed… and that plus his preceding HS career shows plenty of promise.

I guess it’s a beef if you say someone performed lower than expectations.
sorry, not trying to pick an argument with you specifically or any such thing. But the OP's "bombed" was inflammatory... it did not say 'lower than...' I just didn't like it. These aren't pros, but here an 18-ish year old kid, who didn't do too bad under pressure IMO.

Fair perspective if you didn’t like the word “bombed”.
Hard to argue that he did well for all of his accomplishments and the hype he’s had. Again, the greatest high school runner in history took 60th.

I love it that I found your 150th prediction when it was at exactly 150 downvotes, I wonder how many more it will get between now and the race you are predicting?
Way too early to take this performance too seriously. First ever college race on a course that, while historic, hasn't always been known as a course where everyone runs fast right away. Additionally, he didn't even run poorly. Not critical that Sahlman hits it out of the park right away.
