Colin will be just fine. He will be all American this year and top 10 by next year. He’s that talented. This being his first race he did well. There is so much learning that comes from just one race. As he gains more racing experience his placement and times will come down. He has a bright future at NAU
So, the 28 SO or under that were ahead of him won't improve as much as him for some reason?
By November he will already be beating 20 of those sophomores.
Why will he improve more? Isn’t this the guy who trained under the best high school coach in the world, ran in the most competitive meets possible in high school? Isn’t he likely closer to his ceiling than these other guys from worse programs and much less impressive high school history?

I have no idea BUT when you have run 1:48 and 3:39 there is a chance you have some potential. We shall see.
Givens in the B race was super impressive for Frosh. I think he was injured much of his senior year. Really struggled at CIF and he ran only 10s slower today than Sahlman.

Yeah honestly thought he would be one of those guys you never hear from again after high school. Glad to see him proving me wrong though.

This had me cracking up.
Combine all that natural speed with an epic endurance base and I think he's a lock for AA this year if not materially better. He's only been at altitude for what, 2 or 3 months?

That's a very tall ask for him. He finished 60th so not only does he have to improve in the next month by 20 spots against this field but he also has to beat at least another 20 guys nationally that are better than him and didn't run in this race....Clinger and Allen from BYU plus all the low sticks from Ok State, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas, Princeton, Alabama, Arkansas, Montana St, Butler, Cal Baptist, etc. Oh and he has to extend it to the 10k distance as well.
It's no lock but the kid has better credentials than almost any incoming NCAA xc runner ever, and he has one of the best coaches and 7000' of altitude to make that transition successful. Besides, the difference between 60th at Nuttycombe and 20th at NCAA's is very small in time. The race was won in 23:10 (rounded). 20th was 23:28. Sahlman ran 23:50. He was 40 seconds back of 1st but just 22 seconds back of 20th and 26 seconds back of 10th (23:24). I wouldn't bet on him challenging for the win, but he's going to be considerably better and I give him a 50% shot at top 20 at NCAA's.
