Cooper has been a bit unlucky picking events. I believe he could’ve made the Olympic team in the 1500. He was beating Hocker most of the year and could’ve made the final. This year he would’ve placed higher in the 5k, he beat Grijalva (who finished 4th) in the same kind of race at NCAAs. If he gets a lot stronger he has a chance of outkicking Fisher in sub 13 races. I am very high on Teare if Jerry doesn’t injure him.
Grijalva has leveled up, so I would not be unequivocally picking Teare to beat him in the 5000. I’m not sure I’d pick Teare at all right now over Luis. Also, Teare has a LONG way to go before he’s out kicking Fisher in a sub 13 5000. Teare has no chance of hanging with Fisher over the last 1/3 of the race. Fisher is likely a 12:45-7 runner now and Teare is 15 seconds off that pace. They are not currently in the same league.
Listen, I’m a big Teare fan. He ran in the same small school HS conference as my children. I’ve watched him race since he was in 9th grade, but after watching him at xc nats in 2021, I would not exactly label Teare a strength based runner. He’s no Mantz. He’s sort of a tweener, not really having the wheels to be world class in the 1500 and not yet strong enough for the 5000. Maybe this will change, but BTC is a risky move. He already has a tibial stress reaction. I think BTC may just chew him up and spit him out.
I mean Mantz is an extreme example. I think tweener is fair, i more meant strength as far as 1500m runners go. I’d say before joining BTC, Cranny was a tweener and so was GDS to some degree. I think Jerry does great in making that sort of runner great at the 5 and even the 10.

I’m rooting for him for sure. Having a world track medalist some day from the CA D5 Bay Area Conference would be wild. Of course Jason Kidd and Damian Lillard attended the same HS, so Cooper will never be the greatest athlete to graduate that small school.

I'm from the Bay Area and remember Dame going to HS in Oakland. Never heard of a St Joseph Notre Dame connection. Turns out he was at SJND for just his sophomore year. Don't think they get to claim him. :-)

That’s true. Well….Jason Kidd for sure….so Cooper can slot in at #2.

wut?
he won the usas 15 how would he have finished higher in the 5?
Some interviews lead me to believe they aren’t personally that close. i.e. Cole decided to go pro and told Cooper only after; they’re not in the same year; etc.

This reminds me of when Kevin Durant joined the Warriors.
Surprising considering the success he has had with Thomas.
I would like to see Cole join Very Nice Track Club.
I wonder if him and Hocker both getting stress fractures within a month of each other had something to do with it. Seems a bit odd to leave your college coach who coached you to NCAA records and a US title within 9 months of turning pro.
Hocker is obviously very talented but he may not be cognitively equipped to be that good. Sheltered guy from Indiana, not getting vaccinated, weird allegiance to a guy who coached you for two years (one good, one of regression) and looks like he will be unemployed in 2022-23, etc are not good signs. Wouldn't be surprised to see him go the way of Wheating and Webb.

Hocker had an enormous breakthrough indoors last year at age 19 to run 3:50 in the mile, then to win U.S. trials at 20 over the reigning Olympic champion, and get sixth in 3:31 at the Olympics. This year he ran 3:50 again in the mile and 13:06 before getting injured. He just turned 21 in June. There is literally no reason not to believe in his future.
Sticking with a coach who got him there makes plenty of sense, though you'd like to see him with training partners of a similar level again.
Nor is there any reason to compare him with Andrew Wheating, not by body type (tall/short), not by region of the country (New England/Midwest), not by 800 speed (1:44/1:46), not by early running (started junior year/started in elementary school).
