Most people here don’t know what they’re talking about. They’re bitter 16’ 5k runners who hate to see people succeed. I’ve found that there is a strange range around the 15:00-16:30 level where people get very bitter. They want to be hot s_it but all the numbers say otherwise. So they develop this weird cognitive dissonance. Once you get faster (14:xx, 13:xx) you start to appreciate that some people are just better and there’s nothing you can do about it.
So to answer your question — can you become elite? Who knows. But if you have the drive you might as well try. Some people will try for years and never run 17 min for 5k. Some people run 13:30 off basketball training. Focus on it one step at a time and you’ll get the most out of your ability. Also, try not to get injured.
