Sure love those heats, you can finish next to a world champ coasting in the prelims or goto to Cali and become your own world champ, seems easy to me what the better choice is, but as others have mentioned Cade likely wouldn’t have been competitive for a medal in Cali so perhaps the heats were better.
During world U20s I had to scroll down halfway through the Letsrun homepage to find results. You're not fooling anyone that U20s is a big deal. It's not.
Do you know the qualifying standard for the 800 at world U20s? 1:51.The standards for USATF is 1:46.00, Flatt got in as top 32.
I really think you’re a troll at this point with such silly argument but I’m going to give you a serious answer :
We can all play that game. Yeah you had to scroll down on Letsrun but then I can also say the whole world athletics website was remade for world u20, showing schedule and everything when you opened it. But then if the Bro Jo’s are your only source of informations about the sport that may explain why your knowledge is so limited.
Please try to understand that if Letsrun posts a lot about us trials, that’s because letsrun is an american website. They didn’t post a lot about world u20 because the only distance/middle distance american “stars” who decided to go were Juliette Whittaker and Roisin Willis. Those two still got a lot of coverage, with one of the biggest thread this week being about them. Like another poster said, if we had Hobbs, Flatt, the Sahlmans or the Youngs in a final you would have seen a lot of coverage because they are american stars.
Doesn’t mean the rest of the world don’t care about this competition. Just go to World Athletics website or instagram page and tell me how many posts you see about world u20 and how many about US trials. World athletics instagram page has 2 millions followers, that’s more than letsrun will ever have, letsrun only have 8000. In fact, even the World u20 2022 instagram page has twice the amount of followers Letsrun have, even though that page was only active for three or four months. So not seeing a lot of coverage on letsrun is really not a good argument.
The fact that Flatt qualified without hitting the standards prove they don’t mean much, you have to be top 32 and that’s it. At world u20s the standards are very easy because you can’t run the competition without having them, then each country have their own qualification process on top of them. If you look at world u20s 800m final the top 5 were all in 1:44/45 shape and you can’t deny it.
Plus no one is trying to argue that qualifying at US senior trials is harder than qualifying at world u20s. We’re just saying that qualifying at USAs only to brag about who you beat in the first round of the championship is not better than a world championship medal.
Do you know Ajee Wilson finished 8th in her semi final at 2012 US trials ? Probably not. On the other hand a lot of people know she is the 2012 world u20 champion.
> proceeds to analyze a heat at the US senior champs
lmao this is peak copium. As I've already stated: a medal, of any kind, is forever. You're delusional if you think Flatt's performance in the heats at US seniors was important in any way.
Ask Willis if she'd like to trade her two U20 golds for "second place in the first heat" of US senior nationals.
In every way, competing and getting exposure at the US National Champs was better for Flatt. The opportunity for marketing and the obvious experience of running at the highest national level. It’s not even close. Did you see how many threads he had during that week?
Even at the most basic level, advancing from your heat while finishing right next to Donovan Brazier - the reigning world champ - is super cool.
Thread counts??
Are you seriously basing Flatt's "exposure" on the # of LRC threads generated??
LMAO!!!
You do realize that LRC threads are generated by about the same 20 or so people, right??

World Athletics hosts the damn meet, of course they are going to post about it. That's like posting the community college meet was a big deal because the community college had a lot of pictures of it on it's twitter.
You morons would rather see our top young athletes NOT try to make the senior team but instead only race against people their age (who are much slower than the senior athletes). To anyone with a brain, Flatt's decision showed a ton of courage and self confidence. In his mind he thought he had a real shot at making the senior championship team, you can't fault the kid for putting all his eggs in that basket.
Yeah they host the meet, and oh yeah, they also happen to be the international governing body for the entire sport. That in itself should tell you it's a meet of some significance.
No one here is questioning whether Flatt's decision to run seniors instead was the right decision or not, they're disputing your moronic assertion that no one cares about World U20's and that the standard there is poor. Stop beating your drum.... you are, unbelievably, actually managing to sound more idiotic with every new post.

Hmmm… looks like the YouTube post of the U20 women’s 800 already has 260k views in 3 days. After a month the men’s 800 final only has 139k views.
Incoming Stanford freshman Roisin Willis rallied in the final 100m for a come from behind gold medal at U20 Worlds in the women's 800m, setting a championshi...
Bryce Hoppel wins a National Title in a very close 800m race with Jonah Koech taking second place and Brandon Miller diving to take third place by .04 second...

Where's the men's U20 800m final? They didn't even post a video. ZERO VIEWS.
Went from “nobody cares about world u20 as a whole” and “it’s world athletics competition of course they’re going to post about it” to “they didn’t even post the mens 800m final that happened less than 48 hours ago” real quick.
Flatt was .07 away from making the final at seniors, he finished the meet in 9th as the 1st out of the final. His experience there is going to help him 10x more than going to race slower people at U20s.
Cade Flatt is only the 8th fastest u20 over 800m in the world this year. So no, he would not have been racing slower people.
The guy who won world u20 this year is a 1:44 guy.
The guy who finished 7th is also a 1:44 guy and a WORLD SENIOR indoor silver medalist (harder than USAs), the doha diamond league winner, the Kenyan champion, and a semi finalist in Eugene. In fact he did better at worlds than US current top 800m runners, Bryce Hoppel, Brandon Miller and Donavan Brazier in Eugene.
The guy who finished 4th is also a 1:44 guy
The guy who finished dead last in that final is a 1:46 guy, just like Cade Flatt.
So no, world u20 was never going to be easy work for him, in fact medaling at world u20 was probably way harder than making the final at USAs considering the level of US mens 800m running now, and considering the fact that even a world indoor silver medalist, kenyan senior champ and diamond league meet winner could not medal at world u20s.
I don’t know why you all like to denigrate world u20s so much, world u20s are never easy for anyone. Even a 12:43 Selemon Barega could not medal in the 5k at world u20s in 2018 just after running one of the fastest 5k of all time. World u20s are a real test, for anyone.
Barega ran his 43:?? 5000m AFTER his 4th place in the U20 WC 2018 5000m.
But otherwise you are right: Barega WAS on paper the clear favorite but was oversprinted by the Kenyans Edward Pingua Zakayo and Stanley Mburu (second in the 10000m at the Worlds in Eugene) and a certain Norwegian "snail".
And I agree that Flatt would have taken some scalps if he had been able to medal in Cadi.
Where's the men's U20 800m final? They didn't even post a video. ZERO VIEWS.
Good point - I guess the whole premise of this thread was wrong all round - nobody was going to care what Cade was doing no matter which event he chose.
idiot sandwich wrote: "In his 1st round race he was shoulder to shoulder with the REIGNING WORLD CHAMPION Brazier. He beat 1:43 guy Jewett. Hoppell is a 1:43 runner who was 4th in the world in 2019, Murphy has run 1:42 and has an Olympic bronze. Plus it's August, he was racing hard since cross country. 10 months of racing is enough, 12 is overkill. Smart to peak in June, rest, then prepare to make the 2023 world championship team where he'll have a legit chance."

You conveniently omitted that Brazier, Hoppel, Jewett and Murphy are far from their former level.
Of course flatt will have a chance to reach the 800m team next year, especially if the general level is as low as this year.
Recall that Flatt skipped the US U20 meet to run seniors instead and got, uh, second in a heat or something?
Colossal fail.
Glad the 800 girls (Willis and Whittaker) had some common sense.

I totally disagree!
Why would he think there would be no competition at WJr; there are at least a half dozen juniors that ran faster than him this year. You think going out in the semis at USAs is a better experience than an expense paid trip to Columbia; representing your country; lining up against athletes your own age and possibly winning a global sporting events medal.

After reading this post I have changed my mind. He should've gone to U20
