Exactly. The 5k is too stacked, he seems to be inconsistent at it, and the 1500 is wide open in comparison. Seems like a no brainer to me.
Versus facing Hocker, teare, nuguse, Kessler and the rest? Seems like a toss up. He needs to make a big break through in each event to be a contender. It isn't remotely clear which will be easier.
All those guys you listed have been pretty inconsistent. Even Teare, the most consistent of the bunch, showed massive weakness today. Compare that to the 5k, with Fisher, Nur, McGorty, Kincaid, other BTC guys, Young, maybe Klecker etc, etc I don't think he has a hope in hell of coming top 3. The 1500 is more of a tossup moving forward.
Drew Hunter 3:34.8 at Sunset tonight for 4th. Looks like he’s finally switching back to the 1500 from the 5000. If he stays healthy, could we see him running 3:33 or even 3:32 by next summer? Could he make the US team?
He is getting his groove. I would bet 3:32 or faster next year and the year after he will be 3:30 or faster. I would also bet he will be sub 3:50 in the mile and will join the low 13:00's to high 12:50's in 5000m also. Race fans forget he went pro right after high school and it has taken him a couple of years to adjust. I will also admit I joined in on the fun of cracking jokes about his previous performances but it is a right of passage to deal with critics. I think adidas made a good investment in Hunter. He will be World and Olympic Caliber and is finally on the right path and I am rooting for him.

Same Nur who got smoked at the NCAA? Same Kincaid who dnfed? Same mcgorty who gets injured every other day?
Obviously this is all a predication game.right now if you can run 3:34/13:05 you will be fighting for a spot on the team. Who knows what the standard in 2024 will be. Maybe hocker and Kessler turn into 3:31 guys and then you have 5 guys running 3:33 fighting for that last spot. Or maybe we have like 5 334 guys fighting for 3 spots. And you can do the same in the 5k. Maybe young and klecker are 1255 guys. Or maybe they are 27:00 guys who skip the 5k.
You also need to think about how you perform in championship races? Don't do well in the heat? 1500m might be your future. Can't run a 53s last lap? Probably need to stick with the 5k. Can't handle rounds? 1500m might not work out.
