Yeah and lest we forget that Irish dunk master Shaquille O'Neal! Clearly that Irish blood helped him dominate the NBA for over a decade. Nothing says "top 'o the morning" more than ripping down a backboard or making blanket generalizations based on a name...
Meanwhile no love for fellow young up and comer Roisin Willis who is an actual first generation Irish-American whose mother was an Irish Olympian and a teammate and contemporary of Sonia O'Sullivan? Is it because she married a Willis and Roisin didnt inherit her mothers family name of Dennehy? Another reason its silly to identify ethnicities only by surname.
What an odd reaction.
I'm not the OP, I simply pointed out that the surnames Houlihan and Murphy are distinctly Irish. That is indisputable.
I never said that had anything to do with how fast they are, I never said that makes them mostly Irish. I understand that as Americans they absolutely could have and likely do have various other ethnicities in their make up.
As for Roisin Willis, I’m not familiar with her. I’m not American and she’s unknown to me up to now, so that’s why I didn’t mention her.
Relax slim not everything is an attack on you. Just used that string of posts listing "Irish" runners by name to make my point using Shaquille O'Neal and Roisin Willis as examples. All Americans in the end. No need to manifest indignance on behalf of the OP at a smirky post that wasnt even attacking you.

Maybe re-read you’ve gone off on one here.
Besides the OP for right or wrong said Irish blood, not Irish (citizens). Strange outburst.

OP actually said "Katelyn Tuohy is Irish". Word for word. So you might want to re-read yourself. But I was still aware of the implied distinction despite the clear misleading title. Which is why my joke was about an obvious American who was not at all Irish despite his very Irish name. Now why are you guys trying so hard to take this so seriously exactly?
Amazed by the number of amazing distance runners originating from such a small country! Irish distance runner Sonia O'Sullivan, who won 16 medals at the world stage, is one of the greatest if not the greatest female distance runner of all time.
Katelyn Tuohy from what I heard also has Irish blood? If yes, then that quite explains her tremendous running prowess. They are born to run.
l.Rex, so where did the OP said that Katelyn was Irish? word for word where? also the title was changed by letsrun, it was "Is Katelyn Tuohy Irish...?" if im not mistaken ... also the OP literaly said word for word "Katelyn Tuohy from what I heard also has Irish blood? If yes, then that quite explains her tremendous running prowess. They are born to run."
so the last name gives it away, but idk about discussing a college runner's heritage on here, like if she doesn't bring it up herself or decide to run for Ireland as a pro, why is it a subject?
oh Isnt this rich! lol! jealous of what? Of who? Of someone I cheer for and have supported long before you came here and made a miserable fool of yourself worshiping and using to promote your sad social media accounts? Of someone I have defended on countless occasions against baseless claims? is that how jealousy works in your paranoid little mind? How is it that your perspective is so warped that you perceive every statement made about any other athlete to be an attack on the only person you can fit into your universe exactly? Even a statement simply about where their mother is from! Do you really truly not understand that most people can appreciate the talents of multiple athletes at once? Especially when they are good decent hard working kids like both Tuohy and Willis are? And please explain to me exactly how noting that Roisin Willis is more Irish than Katelyn Tuohy is an attack on Katelyn Tuohy in any way. Or on the Irish. Or how bringing up the most obvious example of an actual Irish American athlete on a string of comments about Irish American athletes is "jealousy". Id love to hear how all that works in your angry knee jerk dog crap of a brain. So please do enlighten.
And while you are at it, you still havent answered my question Ive asked more than once now. How do you square with yourself the fact that being a loud mouth overreactive Katlyn Tuohy stooge all over letsrun and social media and elsewhere makes you EXACTLY the kind of person that Tuohy hates? How do you rationalize that blatant hypocrisy when you are alone with yourself? Using her simply to get views on your social media is gross to her. And definitely, as Ive already noted, attacking her teammates and her friends and fellow runners when someone has the audacity to even mention them in the same breath as her is like the very worst thing you could ever do if you wanted Katlyn Tuohy to appreciate your "fandom" for her. So Id really love to know how THAT works in your head too.
There are no age groups. And comparing her only to Americans is typical. She is fast for the NCAA. She is not fast as compared to top Americans. We saw it 2 weeks ago. She is definitely not fast on a world level.
"She is fast for the NCAA."
well shes not only "fast" but "fastest" this year and her solo 15:14 was the fastest collegiate time in the last 5 years (6th yr senior orton ran 15:12 last year but at a pro meet), her solo 4:06 was the fastest in 3 years, just less than a second shy of #2 all-time just behind 1500m greats Jessica Hull and Sinclair Johnson.
"She is not fast as compared to top Americans. We saw it 2 weeks ago"
As if that race was fast HAHA! Also, doesn't making it to the USA Championships mean that you are one of the "top Americans"? if not then how many are "top Americans"? or how do you classify top "Americans" is it by world athletics scoring? because Katelyn ranked 4th in the U.S. pre-USA Champs, or is it podium finishers? then if its the latter then it should have been "She is not fast as compared to Bowerman Babes" and pretty much includes all non-bowerman runners, and not just Katelyn.
"She is definitely not fast on a world level."
and that's okay coz I don't think America's top female distance runners are fast on a world level either, except for Alicia Monson.
Just to tackle that bit about "Irish blood" being an advantage.. Ireland underachieves if anything.
Track and field a major minority sport over here. Our best athletes play native sports of hurling and Gaelic football which are 10x as big as the next sports of soccer and rugby. Track (athletics) comes somewhere after that. Our weather and terrain does make for a good environment for training endurance and xc runners (never too hot or cold to run and lots of rolling hills).
Sonia is head and shoulders our greatest ever athlete and so far there has been only one of her! We have had some class acts over the years, notably the milers of the 80s and Treacy at xc and Derval/Fionualla and there is a good crop of talent at the moment (after a fairly barren 20 years).
A good majors for Ireland is someone making a finals. A medal even at European level is a rare achievement to be celebrated. As some other poster mentioned Jamaica kicks the crap out of us for medals.
I'm a proud Irishman and heavily involved here as a volunteer coach and (now) masters athlete but if any European nation should be looked at right now as a talent pool it's Scotland. Those guys have a similar population and are absolutely crushing it recently.. Muir, Reekie, Kerr, Wightman, O'Hare, etc.
So.. my 2cs.. yes, Katelyn Tuohy a great american athlete with an Irish name. No it's not any Irish genes making her great. This was probably a troll post anyhow but I bit 🤣
First thing is that Tuohy is American. She is a mixed breed like most Americans. Second thing is that she is not even top 50 all time American and she is nonexistent all time in the world.
Is she mixed breed like, as you say, most Americans? I am USA born. I am 100% Italian. My grandparents came from Italy.
My ancestry shows 70% Italian, 30% other areas (all controlled at one time by Rome).
My ancestors arrived in Italy 7000 years ago.
I think the point is not that the specific island produces a lot of talent, but that there are a lot of runners with Irish "blood".
You remind me of Sha'carri Richardson. She claims to be the best until she gets embarrassed and then claims that it didn't matter to her anyway. The old saying is "that is why they play the game". They literally did that 2 weeks ago and Tuohy showed us that she isn't fast as vomoared to the too Americans. A few Americans ran away from the rest and Monson would have also. Schweizer and Monson would beat Tuohy by 250 meters. Thise are facts yet you still hang on the fact that she beats people in the NCAA. Tuohy would get lapped on a world stage. She is not fast. She is fast against the NCAA competition but your constant silly claims do not help build her fan base.
