Will we remember Flatt if he goes DFL in the semi? The record is what kids see online, not if he made it to the semi's of the USATF senior meet. Cade will be the GGOOAATT if we gets the record tonight, and if he flames out off the back of the pack he will be forgotten like Kersch who was much more successful post HS than Granville. Lot of cred from setting the national record.
This is a race. To make the USA team. Survive and advance. What is he makes the final? How about if he makes the team? Less important that breaking a HS record. Keeping in mind the HS record holder never ran that fast again, had a so so college career, and no post college control.
"which he ended up being too tired from his national record to win."
Granville won the final the next day.
Isn’t it weird how groups of people can mythologize history and collectively misremember what really happened? I clearly remember him setting that record, then winning the title afterward. But I swear this is like the 15th or 20th time I’ve seen someone say he lost the final after setting the record. I think I first heard that error around 2002 or so, so it’s an enduring myth. I wish I know how our collective minds worked so that I could tell you how these myths get started. Fascinating, in its way.
Yep same as a ton of people think the US team beat Russia to win the gold medal in the Miracle on ice game. It was a semi.
In this case, I think that he lost the state championship final as a Junior despite having already set class records for the 3 underclass grades. This is apparently what was being misremembered.
There are an absurd number of possibilities in this scenario involving making or not making the team (or even advancing out of the semis) and breaking and not breaking the record. In many of them he is remembered as the GOAT. But if he had hustled in the last bit of the heat, he would already be the GOAT by most standards. I think the odds are he sets the record, but his semi and/or the final could be god awful tactical and end up north of 1:48. I would hate to see him end his season DFL w/o the record, but I do not think that last night will be his lifetime PR in any case. He has a good future ahead, just too bad VanHoy left and who his coach will be is uncertain.
I'm fully hoping he misses record now and Granville goes full Mercury Morris troll mode and posts a picture of himself eyes closed smiling with head on pillow.
At this point, he's run 1:47.04, 1:47.00, 1:46.53, 1:46.51, and 1:46.48. That is just incredible consistency, and in the prelims he had the record in his legs. In the semis, he was just .07 off of the last qualifier and 0.2 off of the big Q. In a faster semi, he might have had the record. But this is a terrific performance for his age and the level of runner he's had to train with. I hope he does get the record after the trials. At this point, there's only .04 standing between him and no argument that he's the best 800m high school runner we've had.
The reality is I have almost become a convert. Cade Flatt ran big tonight, he has had a nice series, 3/4 at least in incredible set ups. I think, still folks need perspective, Glanville who underachieved later, still has a HS record at 18 plus, not 19 plus. Not in almost 4 sets ups. Get Over it, the record still stands, great series by Flatt, but he is indeeda 19+ still chasing records by 18 year olds. He has had no less than 4 drawn out in 52.x or lower races, it is what is is. Never won one big won..Sumner did in a set up at 18 plus..winning..Glanville no help. By the way Flatt is very good, not just good, in the NCAA now? He would be really good as a frosh, would not have won one big race.

Every time you misspell Granville's name you shoot yourself in the mouth.
and yes I did, sorry, all else is amazingly accurate, in the real world of track, you either run the mark, or you do not. Flatt , who is very good for a College frosh age guy, is very very good, has now had 5 shots at really solid set ups, did not happen at a year older. And I apologize for that mis spell. I do.
Great run by Cade in that semi. Of the first four finishers he looked the best in the final straight. A teenager competing as well as he does is rare at the top USA track level. Rojo is right. The USATF should use their discretion and advance him to the final. Cade makes races exciting and has loads of talent.
