I know you’re a huge fan, but Brosnan’s batting average is pretty much like every other coach. He’s had hits and misses, but the Young and Sahlman brothers are complete outliers.
He’s done a good job with youth studs like Appleford, Goldstein and Ascbrenner, but has also had misses with other youth stars like Cantu, Blunt and Martinez (who couldn’t even finish his high school career because he was so fried).
Nobody is perfect. Brosnan did some good things, but also has had WAY more talent than anyone else. Some didn’t work out, some worked out well and then there were the Youngs and Sahlmans which we may never see brothers so talented, especially on one team.
I think the UCLA situation has shed some light on the situation. He has mediocre talent and he’s getting mediocre results. If he was such a genius you’d think he could make a noticeable impact on runners after 4 months of his super duper training.
I don’t think it’s fair to judge results with only 4 months of training, while in a competitive season.
One of the best coaches in the country can’t improve a team in a season? If you take a team coached by someone who was fired for poor performance, give them coaching by one of the best coaches in the country for a season, you don’t think they should improve? I would say significant jump in year one, making nationals in year 2 and competing for a podium in year three is fair expectations for someone as heralded as Brosnan.
Many say it was the coaching, not the talent at Newbury.
I'm no Brosnan fan but all of these guys calling him an awful coach because he wasn't able to turn UCLA around in 4 months are ridiculous and just looking for a reason to hate. It took him 3 years to make a national-class program out of NP. Why don't we give him a couple years to recruit some guys and put the current athetes through a couple training cycles before we start jumping to conclusions? If he can't do it in 5 years, then we'll know that it was the athletes, not the coach.

Who said he was awful? I would just think someone as great as he is supposed to be would make a quantifiable difference over a coach that was just fired because they were so bad. Is that unrealistic?
Continuation: On Saturday, November 12, 2022, Newbury Park were scheduled to run in the CIF SS prelims. The Newbury Park Boys were placed in the Division 2, Heat 5 race. At the Marmonthe League Finals, the times of the Arnav Shetty, Nathaniel Schohn, and Micah Dickran were all very similar. They ended up as their 7-9 runners (very far behind their 6th). For this reason, the Panthers opted to sit out Dev Doshi and Aaron Sahlman, because they wanted to make room for Shetty, Schohn, and Dickran in the race, since they wanted to use the CIF SS prelims race to determine which one of the three gets the seventh spot on the team, which happened to be one of the most important, intriguing questions of the season. At the first mile, Brayden Seymour was leading the pack of three which included the Young brothers. All went at 4:40. Aaron Cantu was not far behind, running a 4:48. The competitors for the seventh spot, Shetty, Schohn, and Dickran were all together at 5:02 in the first mile. At Mile 2, Lex Young took the lead, with Leo Young .1 second behind. Brayden Seymour was two seconds behind. Cantu moved down one spot. The pack of Shetty, Schohn, and Dickran began to string out a little bit. Shetty moved up 16 spots, Schohn moved up 14, and Dickran moved up 10. At mile 3, Lex and Leo Young tied for first at 14:56. Seymour finished 18 seconds behind. Cantu finished 20 seconds behind Seymour. Shetty moved up 4 more spots, ending up in 10th place and finishing only two spots and 23 seconds behind Aaron Cantu. For the first time in his running career, he scored for the Panther’s varsity team with Lex and Leo Young in the same race as him. Schohn and Dickran, however, dropped seven places. Schohn finished 32 seconds behind Shetty, and Dickran finished 13 seconds behind Schohn. The Panthers took home the CIF SS prelims title. Shetty has earned the seventh spot on the team that is favored to win the CIF Southern Section Championships, CIF state meet, the Nike Cross Nationals meet. After the race, Dickran and Schohn knew that they are not seniors and that they will get another chance to challenge for a top 7 spot next year and have received some motivation to work hard in the offseason.
That's my point. Just because you are really, really good as a freshman does not mean that you will develop or even be better as a senior. Whereas those other programs were unable to do anything with freshmen of similar ability, Brosnan was able to help develop these very talented eighth graders into among the best high school distance runners ever, and more to come this year.
#4 on the team in the recent race. And their super soph Cressman wasn’t even there
And Mason / St Xavier don’t just reload. They are always deep. They have so many guys on JV under 17 minutes. Those guys would be varsity for 90% of the schools. and then the next year they jump in and help the team right away
On the LACCTIC ratings, UCLA's 48th in the country. Ten seconds improvement per person and they would be top 30. 20 seconds improvement and they'd be top 15. They improved somewhat this year but it's too soon. To put his stamp on the program, Brosnan needs people to buy fully into his system and to try with it for several years. Recruiting is not only about getting the guys with the most 'talent'. It is about getting people who will implement your system. Nico Young served that role, as a leader who inspired the younger kids to go along. But make no mistake about how good Brosnan was as a coach. The Youngs and Sahlmans pre-Brosnan times were very good in some cases but nothing that unusual in comparison to the history of American 8th grade xc and track. Yet, they, together with multiple other sub-9 guys beyond the five brothers that he produced, would go on to form what was unarguably the best high school xc and track distance team ever in the United States. There isn't a single measurable indicator of talent that would tell you that he had the most talented team ever appear to him just by happenstance.

Are you dating him?
You have no clue the level of talent that was delivered to him. How do you say UCLA improves somewhat this year. They were better in 2019.
NP compared to Crater HS in Oregon, which is 1/4 the size, is not really anything that crazy and Crater has had 20 years of success vs. 3.
l
Funny how we are comparing this team to Crater here. Cause I watched the NXR NW live, and Crater crushed Jesuit and all teams there. And the Crater team said in an interview they are gonna win NXN
Interestingly enough, if Jesuit LA refuses to make things make sense and decides to skip NXR next year, Crater will probably be the favorite to win it next year since they only lose Gorze
At the CIF state meet, at the first mile, Lex Young, Leo Young, and Aaron Sahlman all went out together. Brayden Seymour was not far behind.
Dev Doshi and Aaron Cantu were very far behind them in the first mile.
At the second mile, Brayden Seymour dropped some places.
Lex Young took the win and Leo Young ended up in second place. Aaron Sahlman ended up in third. All in the merge as well.
Dev Doshi ended up in 4th on the team and Brayden Seymour dropped so many places that he ended up 5th on the team.
Aaron Cantu bolstered a personal record of a 15:39. After seeing the results, Newbury Park knew they won the race in both D2 and the merge, and they knew that they had a trip to nationals secured.
On the girls side, things did not go as planned. Ailish Hawkins, Tiffany Sax, and Sophia Grant were leading the team at the first mile. Danielle Brotcke was 4th on the team at the first mile. Unfortunately, she ended up as the 7th runner on the team when she finished the race. Maya Natarajan stepped up for the team like she did at Clovis and she ended up as the 4th runner on the team, running an 18:50.
Newbury Park girls team ended up in the second place in the D2 race, but only in 6th in the merge, meaning that they will not be going to Nike Cross Nationals.
With today's NON Mile, I think we've come to the end of an era. The past 4 years, we've seen the most dominant and influential high school in T&F history constantly at the peak of the sport. While they may still be good o...
