I know it's almost impossible to separate "the experience" from the straight up dollars, but often when you look at how much time you spend training and traveling, it's hard to make the hard math work out. For those that received large scholarships- congratulation you must be very very talented.
I received a small partial scholarship that really helped me pay for the rest of my schooling, but in reality I could have made more money working. The memories and experience were life changing. I get it, that's not a dollars and sense thing. Also I always had better grade during the season, than the off season. I needed that structure.
The reason I brought it up is that a few HS kids and their parents have been talking about this very thing (whether their kid will try to continue on in athletics in college or just be a normal student). Often the justification is that the small amount of scholarship money doesn't off set the time commitment that athletics take.
