Being tall and lean is the most important factor for having next level sprinting speed. Longer stride length trumps everything when you're approaching max speeds. He just turned 18 in January so he might still be growing.
Did you get about 39 strides over last 100 meters? Almost 101 inches per. Splits looked to be about 10.0/9.49 give or take a .01.
I believe bolt was 9.92 for his first 100m in his 19.19 WR. 9.27 second 100 split. Johnson's second 100m was faster- 9.188 to be exact.
Knighton has a little way to go. Certainly might go faster this year, and WR on the horizon in a couple years, but he may have to go out in 9.95 on the turn and 9.20 coming home to get it!
This is what happens when a fast football player chooses to focus on track. The US would never lose any sport if you had a choice of any of the football players.
love to see it pay off for him. Hopefully other kids take the same route.
lol at all these distance runners here thinking 19.49 and 19.19 are close to each other.
"wow, world record is in trouble next year!"
those times are worlds apart.
i swear distance runners no concept of sprinting.
I think everyone knows this. But he just dropped .3 tenths off his pb from last year and he’s only 18. So ya never know. Plus I think he’s still clean. He’ll have to be dirty to break 19.19
When Bolt was beginning to enter his prime, he dropped his PR from 19.75 to 19.30 in one season. I don't think it's as crazy as you think to imagine Knighton dropping from 19.49 to 19.19 this year. I'm not saying that he will actually do it, but it's not out of the cards.

Look at Michael Johnson's two best times. 19.66 and 19.32. If his training goes well and he catches a flyer under the right conditions, anything is possible.

to play devil’s advocate, this could have been the outlier time just early. With that said he’s the biggest threat we’ve had to the 200m WR since 2012.

Agreed.
On his side is his age and the fact that big events on better tracks are still to come.
Fact: This phenomenally gifted young man has, to date, garnered far less attention or mentions on this forum than Matthew Boling, who has a few years on him. ¿Por qué?
Why isn't anyone talking about his 100m potential? I bet he has no choice but to double up, now. I think the US could have found its first real sprinting superstar since Carl Lewis and Michael Johnson.

I didn't try to count them, just looked at his 100 from the Tom Jones meet earlier this year where he ran 10.04 and it looked like he took about 43.5 in the open 100. What's crazy is Bolt only took 41 in his 9.58.
Knighton definitely has a ways to go since Bolt did his 19.19 with pretty much no wind, but still a crazy time. Maybe Knighton needs to work on his start, but it would be cool to see him go sub 9.8

It might be because Boling has, as you stated, a few years on him.
That was unreal, particularly to open the season. AFAICT he hasn't raced a 200m yet this season, and had a 10.04 w/-0.1 wind two weeks ago... which doesn't signal a 19.49.
Last year, his best was 19.84, so Erryon dropped 0.35 already. Who is he training with? U. Florida?
Do I remember correctly that we get 4 athletes because Noah Lyles is the defending champ from 2019? Otherwise the trials are going to be crazy.
