My life as a post collegiate runner. Part time job at some sports store. Getting in my training runs then in the evening I was a bar back. Average paycheck was a hard earned $400 bucks every 2 weeks. That was combined with my other roommate that was living the dream with me. We would travel to our races together trying to fork up enough extra dough for our extravagant motel room. Occasionally my small sponsorship with Brooks shoes that allowed me a gear stipend of about $2000 a year would fork up the travel pay. Worked my but off trying to break the 4:00 mile, got close enough that a sneeze would have landed me a 3:59.99. I eventually woke up one day and said F-This I am done. I went out got into a career 14 years later I am married Make $200K and my wife makes $80k and have a good life honestly because I got sick and tired of being sick and tired. Chasing the running dream became a waste of time. I started realizing I can enjoy running and fitness without needing to kill myself to do it. My roommate kept chasing the dream which did not amount too nothing for him he wound up running 14:18 for a 5000m and 29:50 for a 10,000m and something like 8:55 for the 3000m steeplechase. He eventually got tired of running and moved on to cross fit. Now he is so far behind the bubble he has done nothing but work the stupid jobs when did when we were roommates. He was telling me hey I want to settle down and don't want to work for something like $50k how do I get into your line of work? He does not understand that my line of work started when I said F-This I am done and began climbing the corporate ladder. A lot of guys that are in the heat of the moment are not going to understand that there is more out there then some race to run. Eventually you will move on and realize things like Las Vegas, travel, and being able to afford nice things is far better. The word stability is a lot better then chasing the track dream.
My Guess is Aric runs for fun and does not care about chasing the Olympics laughing at him about it is pretty funny considering with his name and blood line I am sure he has a few million in a bag from simply having the name Van Halen associated with him. Money might not matter to you right now but someday you will hang up your running shoes find yourself a lady that you want to keep but don't really know how to make her feel comfortable. This brings me to the above you will be in Vegas walking around wander into a high limit room out of curiosity and see a slot machine that has a denominator of $1,000 a pull and wonder who the heck can afford that? Well people like Aric can and people that can make the lady you are with feel secure can. Money might not matter too you right now but when you don't have running anymore you will want something to keep you entertained and entertainment cost money and if you don't have it you will simply be a drunk or drug addict ex runner.
And you'll be destitute in the sewers beneath The Strip. Nice life goals you have there.
Aric is winning at life, seems to me.
Aric was born on third base. He's doing well to remain there just don't act like he hit a triple. A lot of other kids born into wealth waste it away self-indulgently on partying, drugs, or notorious niche sport websites. =VH=
I am the Real deal. Not everyone who gives up running misses out on there opportunity of success in life. Most of the people I associated with during my running days where jerks. Runners are typically egotistical pricks. I think this is for a number of reasons 1.) They are too small and scrawny to win a fight, 2.) they think everyone cares about there running times, 3.) They assume people know who they are, 4.) Bad attitudes, and 5.) They cant hold down a relationship. A college running teammate of mine came to my house and he was a professional runner 2:09 marathon type. I took him out to a local bar for a few drinks he got so intoxicated started yelling at people saying stupid crap like "Do you know who I am" it was embarrassing not only was it disrespectful because we live in the town but it is completely classless. Look at it this way the majority of you guys post towards somebody who finds success and you try to crap all over him or her. This is probably the reason why the majority of you will only be able to look back at running a race as the most successful thing you ever did. I hit times ran inside 4:00 for the mile ran 29:05 for a 10,000m and hit great marks in between. The difference between me and the majority of you is I don't start my conversation out with that it usually does not come up if ever at all. Running is a game or activity treat it as such most of you guys talking trash on this what maybe run 15 something for a 5k if that its not going to get you anywhere keep chasing it. I will keep working with my wife and finding new ways for us to enjoy our life and broaden our future.

This is the LR site rolled up into a nice little package.

No, you are making a blanket statement on all 5 of your reasons and nothing more.

2:09 marathoner friend? Yeah, ok.
Yeah keep telling yourself that. If you read the statements and you argue against them you are doing exactly what one of the statements says. 3.) They assume people know who they are. You automatically assume I am full of crap and don't have a 2:09 former teammate. Question do you know who I am? You don't so stop being number 4.) having a Bad attitude toward my correct assumptions.
You helped create this. I am just sick and tired of peoples bull$h!t on this site. I enjoy running like the most of the old timers here. I am 39 years of age and enjoy running. I don't race I enjoy being fit. I am just sick and tired of seeing people constantly bash people while here. They are a bunch of hobby joggers that have never done crap in the sport and simply put need to shut up. I have put out times have a World Athletics Profile so I have earned my spot.
My wife is very attractive I wouldn't be into the super model type... I do well over six figures myself and my wife is close to six figures... I was not a 5k runner more of a miler I ran 14:17 in college... My problem is people just ragging on people constantly on this sight... I use to do that crap in college... I come on here now just looking for info from other runners that enjoy jogging and fitness and it is constant negativity... The amount of surgeries I have had I need to the posts just to learn about recovery and other useful info...See a familiar name like Aric curious what he is doing click on the link nothing but people hammering away...

The timing clock doesn't care how much you have in the bank.
You put those times by doing the work and showing up.

I gather he's been roasted in this thread and others, but if there's some kind of running joke, I'm not in on it.
All I am seeing and saying is if he's putting up 2:4x marathons, it's respectable and he's doing what we do and have done - training and racing.
People will truly understand if you love running when the racing days are over and you do it for cardio, and part of a fitness routine. The amount of former runners that get heavy because they can't do it without training for something. The most enjoyable part of my day is when I put the shoes on and get my 5 miles in. I just love running its an important part of my well being. I run about 30 miles a week and do a bunch of core exercises. I don't race anymore that is for my daughter it's her time to shine.
Looks like distance running is no longer the number 1 priority in his life. What a loser!

I ask, as I assume it doesn't require writing all that much. Your English is terrible.
I have always been impressed by this guy. He comes from an obviously privileged background, but had the gumption to go to Colorado - a place that whatever one thinks about it - is a place where you have to really put yourself out there - and he was an All American. And he is still running, even if just for fitness? Can’t think of anything other than positive here.
