Like BTC's The TEN results, Ben Thomas/coach & Hocker & Teare all knew they were in terrific shape for a 5k. So, strike when the fire is hot.
Happy for them and glad that JJ/Stanford coach was willing to oblige them with this special race - which had nothing to do with Stanford other than to show, once again, how fast Cobb track is for distance running.
I agree. Not great pacing, maybe not the best weather. For a 5K you probably want more competitors so you can just slide in and conserve energy. Everything considered well done.
Those are promising times, especially since we’re still in March. I figured they were both in sub 13:10 shape but hopefully they can run another fast 5k to aim for that sub 13 soon
I thought I saw/heard 12:10pt at 4600 so 56 last lap…impressive if that’s what it was
I watched the replayed and they were at 12:11. I think Cooper is ready to make a world team in tbe 5k if he so chooses.
I like his chances in the 1500 as well given the struggles of Nuguse, Engels and Centro. The 5,000 is very tough with Woody having such a strong finish and international class guys in Fisher/Chelimo.
He's been on a sad downwards spiral since his outstanding 2014 NCAA season. 13:03 5k in 2014 in college and nothing anywhere close since. He's been in a number of races and seems to have just flat out lost his talent. He's still clearly training and trying, he's posting a number of 13:30-50s range 5ks but is way off his personal bests in every event.
Anyone watch the stream and see if he's got any sponsorship?

I was surprised to see he’s still in a current Nike kit

Throw a few other top 5k runners in the mix like Sean McGorty and the 5k team is going to be very hard to make this year. But a fun race for us spectators to watch!
Hocker appears to be quite strong atm too. I’d be surprised if Cole gets a global medal before fish tho.
Yeah Fisher looks closer at the moment. However, Hockers improvement curve is faster and the 1500 is a shallower field. The top 2 are immense (if Tim returns to top fitness), but there is a drop-off for now. Kerr and Kipsang both look great and on the upswing but I’d take that over the 3rd best at 5k/10k if everyone runs.
Given this kind of pacing, 13:08 and a ten second pr bodes awfully well for a 20 year old who ran 3:31 in his third race of the Olympics last year when he had a 13:18 pr doubling back at NCAA's. Cooper Teare also continues to improve, another six seconds in the 5000m here, and I really don't get the sense that their training has been that hard so far. Sub-13's going to happen sooner, rather than later, and with 3:50 speed or better, they're both getting closer to being contenders.
I know people don't like this, but I wish they would hype up their races/TTs a bit more. It would be #Goodforthesport.
So I'm writing from Serbia where it's 4:15 am. Did this race really happen?
This is quite honestly disgraceful. Not necessarily by them. I get it - they are young. But someone with experience, their agent or coach ,etc. needs to tell them, "This is a bad look. The world needs to be less self-absorbed."
We were told they needed to skip World Indoors as they didn't want to race much so they could get ready for World Outdoors. Instead, they run a mediocre 13:06 on the same day as World Indoors. I mean my god. I used to be a college coach. If they need a hard effort - then a hard 3k at Worlds would have worked perfectly. I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about how the travel would cost them a lot of time - it would have cost them to miss 2 workouts.
And I don't want to hear a bunch of crap about how Teare needs the standard. If he can't hit the standard at Pre, then he shouldn't be considering going to Worlds.
Someone in the comments section of our live podcast asked us what I thought they'd run. I said, "My God, they'd better break 13:00 or I'm irate."
I think another t-shirt needs to be made. "I skipped World Indoors and all I got was this lousy 5k pb."
Weldon is right. When World Athletics issues qualifying standards, the window should only include dates after the end of the indoor season unless the race is run indoors.
